Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I've surely fished in terrible conditions before, but I would have to give it some serious thought to remember a time worse than today. While it wasn't terribly cold at around 34 degrees, man, was it windy! 40 mph gusts, with 30 mph sustained. No way I could fish it exposed outside, so I took my trusty Frabill flipover shanty.......twice it nearly doubled as a hang glider, with me still sitting inside! luckily there was enough snow on the ice to prevent it going very far.

Terrible bite also....but that could've been my fault. I had some lookers, but very few would commit. I think if I could've been able to hole-hop, I might of had better luck.....but when I tried it the wind would blow my line completely up out of the hole.

Now for the good news....the best ice I've ever had. Almost 7" right now, with more cold temps on the way. And, despite only catching a handful of gills, I did land this beauty, and invited her home to dinner.

Going to try it again tomorrow. Hopefully, the wind will lay down a bit.

I hear you bout the conditions. I finally got out on the ice Friday and it was pretty chilly. Temps were around 20 degrees but our winds were only gusting to 25mph or so. Great fish too by the way Tony.

Outstanding bluegill Tony! Congrats!

I, too, had horrible conditions today. 20 mph winds with 20 degree temps made fishing in the open really tough. Plus, I was a bit underdressed for the wind chill and had to warm up in the truck. Still had a 'career day' on bass through the ice with 13 along with one 9 inch gill. I did catch 12 bass and the bluegill out of one hole! Had 10 bass over 16 inches with one almost 20 for the BFOD. If the fish hadn't been biting I would have left way sooner.

Way too much fun on tiny ice rods and 2 and 4 pound test...and challenging!
