She's a beauty! I have also encountered the same thing over here in Northern MN. Last night when we were out, we noticed a almost "feeding frenzy" type action. Their backs were coming out of the water! These gills were at the surface over 15ft of water, just after a good rain, we were soaked!
Hey Walt...Some of these fish would actually take the worm as it was descending in the water column and would cause slack in the line prior to when I knew it should have been on the bottom. I used a Walley Marshall 8 ft crappie rod and a 7 ft Renagade Ultra Stick to reach the fish. May go wth my Euro Rods of 11 ft if it looks like I need to make a longer cast.
I tell you Walt, I had a very good day today landing 33 gills over 9 in and a couple of yellow perch at 14 in...all on crawlers fished on the bottom with the slip sinker rig in my blog. This tactic has to work somewhere else for somebody, I hope!
