I have some wire leaders, but I haven't used them.  The only reason I would, will be if the Gar get really thick.  I've lost more rigs to gar, due to cut-offs from their teeth, than I can remember.

Back when I used to fish for cats, I would use wire leaders on occasion also. Around here, catfish and snapping turtles share a common preference for baits as well as habitat. Of course this was before braided line was all in vogue.

yeah, we both usually run wire leaders while catfishing. lots of spots have some pretty gnarly snags, along with having too many break offs on something big.

Wire leaders for cats?

Toughest stuff I use for catfish leader material is 40 lbs test Big Game.  Now, if I was in some really SNAGGY cover, I might go heavier.

David, unless you use 20# line or more, those teeth will shred lines less than 12# with ease. I do the same with a 12 wire leaders when ai hunt for cats larger than 2lbs.

Were you using a wire leader for a  reason?

crap, i forgot to mention that my friend caught this, along with a few of the other photos that i posted! but yes, this is a nice fish! he caught it on a medium rod with 12lb test and a wire leader.

I thought that was the purpose of the "Big and the Ugly" group???

Chris, did you catch this on the same rig that you caught the bowfins on?
