Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Shotting a Floating Rapala is catching a few fish and getting several follow ups and swipes in 50 degree Water. Lift and drop to bottom . Perch are coming up off bottom for it . Shot at 6-8" from lure and it works .Put the shot closer and it's ineffective .

Use a hollow stick bait with rattles?
Then it bobs up and down AND makes noise.

Good idea David , letting the line slide ! I'll have to try that !

It's basically a Carolina rig, with a fixed weight.
Hop the weight along the bottom, the lure follows.

Pretty effective over a clean bottom, kind tough where there's a lot of vegetation... Nearly impossible in brush and woody cover.
If you go with a slightly heavier weight, and a swivel below it, you can let the lure rise on slack line and then "bob" it by popping the line in short jerks. The weight anchors and the lure free slides up and down. Then lift and hop the whole rig to the next zone. I do that off boat ramps and around rock banks, but I've never tried it with a floating stick bait.

Let that line slide, John!

I Imagine it does Chris but I'm not seeing Bass where I've been fishing this .Yes Carl ,it suspends up above the weight and sinks slow . Now I gotta find an even smaller similar profiled bait . The water is really getting cold now and this technique may be losing its effectiveness. Only one way to find out though !

interesting name ,'Eisenhower', I've heard you mention that before

Yellow Perch are a northern fish, originally. But through stocking during the Eisenhower years, most (if not all) Southern impoundments have them. That's how they earned the nickname, "Eisenhowers," in fact.
So, a perch pattern make sense.
Here, LM bass, crappie and striper are the Holy Trinity of gamefish. Further, little thought is given to perch as forage, because SHAD AND HERRING take center stage. There is no reason why a perch patterned lure wouldn't work - I've caught YP's from the lake.
But I can't verify that any real thought is given to selecting that pattern over others. I don't feel it is.

Myself, I tend to favor contrast. I like a pattern that looks like a fish, but which stands out. Realistic, while eye catching. The last Rapala I refurbed, I gave a pearl white finish w/ dark blue back.
The NEXT one, I'll see if I can manage a more subdued perch-like pattern.

Do the shops by you stock this pattern? ,and are Perch prolific in your waters too? I 've thought of Yellow Perch as mainly a Northern fish .
