Thanks guys… past couple years ive been using this miscellaneous pkg of dry flys I purchased a couple years ealier to learn how to fly fish… something just to get me in the game… they were cheap and made in china but they caught the Lepomis.

I started then using them under the float as an after thought when rigging a slip float. I read about using a slip float rig with the tipped fly instead of a plain hook. Straight away I beagan tagging the fish with noticeable ferocity over the plain tipped hook set-up. ive been using the tipped flys under the float since.

When the float settles in the water after the cast the split shot drops down quickly dragging the fly behind then the dry fly waxie undulates and swims around the split shot teasing the fish. I believe a lot of credit goes to the waxie in its slow sinking almost neutral properties. Does not work as well with a denser nite crawler bit… in my experience and opinion.

I am a fly tying hack at the moment compared to the tiers on this site. The tie is simple… layer of thread base wrap… wrapped then with two layers of chenille… on a sickle #10 or #12 hook. I then tie on rubber insect legs… drives them nuts and it’s cheap.

Testing out on the water last week I had one of my best slip/float/fly/waxie outing to date! The day earlier I tag a trophy 10” B.Gill. given this was during the 3 days of the full moon on Major intra-day periods. Bread on a hook may have worked just as well… LOL.

I still however feel optimistic about the tie and will continue to test this open water season.

...when i was physically able to cast a fly rod... this was one of my favorite baits tipped on a plain hook. most of the time i consider them tough little baits able to easily tag multiple fish per bait.
