Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

20151108-BFOTD!! 8' CLASS B'GILL FISHING "IN THE ZONE"

b'gill caught fishing in the zone at 23' FOW jigged and tagged from a tight neutral school. since we agreed at the beginning to keep a few fish under 7.5" this fish was quickly photo'ed and released. protect your fisheries and keep only smaller fish. an 8" fish in Michigan is top tier... know your fisheries and fish and release top tier fish. you are doing your sport a favor by doing so.

congrats to your thinking on harvesting smaller size;  here in Tn.;; there is no limit on blue gill; but can only keep 15  shell cracker;; Old Hickory Lake;; is full of small dinks; ( trust me on that ! I have caught more than my fair share of them  !! )  very few here go after blue gill;  favoring bass or catfish; or crappie. hoping someday to run across some giant blue gills !!

Tony… I just read an interesting fact on lake numbers in these states… 89 natural lakes in Indiana, 0 for Ohio and 11000 lakes in Michigan… more acres per fisherman? Even though I’m surrounded by some great water only 5 B’Gills over 10 inches received citations the past 3 years… I’ve caught many, nudging the 10” mark.

One of the most popular counties to reach the 10” or over mark is Roscommon county… just north of me.

No limits on B’Gill in Indiana will satisfy most of the meat fisherman but IMO will hurt the trophy angler such as myself in the long run. I feel the 25 daily panfish limit in Michigan is a joke and is antiquated in itself. Slot limits are the only way to keep both types of fisherman satisfied (IMO).

Thanks Jeff… IMO I feel it would improve everyone’s over all fishing experience… meat as well as trophy angler. I’ve seen in a few short years time a couple smaller lakes significantly being wiped out of sizable fish… crappies and gills especially. Just a few good fisherman will clean out a lake extensively… I could of accomplished it very easily with knowledge, electronics and presentation and so can anyone else. Many fisherman in my area are fishing for today and not tomorrow.

Interestingly, the Indiana ice fishing board I frequent during the colder months typically has a thread pop up every year comparing the merits of Hoosier bluegills vs. Michigan fish....most northern Indiana anglers make regular trips across the border to fish Mich. lakes, and many claim the average size of bluegills to be larger there than in Indiana. Most credit the bluegill limits imposed in Michigan vs. the no-limit here in Indiana. I regularly see photos of dandy 9-10" gills taken from Michigan waters by these anglers, so I suppose geography plays a huge role....I wonder if the fact that the majority of Hoosier anglers are visiting the southern most Mich waters plays a role....same basic geographical region as northern Indiana, but harvest is limited once you cross the state line?

Good for you.......many would dismiss your strategy but I like the fact that you're considering things that you believe will help your fishing.......good luck to you!
