Do you love big bluegill?
20150812 - after noticing on a previous fishing trip to the bridge the water was crystal clear. I installed an ice fishing reel with 2 pound test braid on my four and a half foot ultralight spinning rod. I brought a handful of ice Jigs and tiny plastic bodies. first cast loaded up with a nice crappie and proceeded to catch a few more after that... Nice little outing.

I joined the NuCanoe web site and have been on the forum, but not nearly as often as I come to Bigbluegill. I need to re-visit the forum. There's a ton of videos on YouTube that I constantly go to. Luckily, there is a Kayak Expo next weekend that I'll be going to near my home. That should not only be entertaining...but expensive!
Gary have you visited the NuCanoe forum?... there are some great ideas for rigging
Thanks, Slip. My birthday is in May and my son told me to hold off on getting one...so it's safe to say he knows what he's getting me this year. I'm going to pass this info on to him. This sounds like the ticket for my adventures to come. I think I'll have some interesting pictures to post this year!! Those fish don't stand a chance.
thanks Gary... feel very blessed to have a great fishing spot within walking distance from my house.
I bought a Lowrance Elite 4 hdi for Kayak and ice fishing for last season… worked out great. I was able to create lake maps or portion of to use and share on both my Lowrance finders. One item about this selection is its size… I wish the unit was a little larger in screen size though. So if your budget could afford move up to the next screen size.
So that being said… I would recommend two different units at this point in time. Changes in models happen very rapidly in this arena. Even though I have no hands on with these models I try to keep up with customer reviews. Randomly setting a budget at around 500.00 I would recommend getting either the Humminbird Helix or Lowrances’s new line of Elite Ti series (brand new model). I would lean towards the Elite 5 TI for the side imaging and touch screen at 599.00 without side imaging is 499.00. The features on these units are incredible!
I would reach for the side imaging for kayaking for this simple reason. Less paddling to find fish. You can spot fish 250 ft away on each side of your kayak. Find fish under docks and boats up next to shore is a great asset in any fishing arsenal. Touch screen would be a huge plus in the kayak.
Here are the features of the Lowrance Elite 5 TI…
Nice looking haul, Slip. Love going out for those buggers. As I trick out my yak, one item I have on my wish list is sonar. Would you recommend the lowrance elite 7 hdi sonar or have another that you would prefer? I'm doing my due diligence on line, but always like to get user feedback.
Sanford... its the toughest time of the year to fish open water on that lake.... water color is usually very brown for weeks... i have my toughest time fishing in cold brown water....
but i give it my best shot at the largest upper creek channel areas.
When the ice melts on wixmon lake , were is the best spot to start fishing bluegills and crappies
Sanford..Funny thing about my personal history with Wixom Lake… about 30+ years ago my in laws moved to Beaverton, mi and my father in law coaxed me into bringing my bass boat up north to give Wixom Lake a try. After doing some research the statistics and the stocking records looked great. We set up a day and fished that lake long and hard and got skunked. We were seeking crappie, SMB and LMB. Could not buy a bite. We actually vowed to never fish that lake again. Zoom to present day and I moved my family a short walk away from some access to Wixom lake. Without a boat I fished the docks and got to know some regulars mainly fishing for crappie and/or b’gill. some days they would come in with empty livewells… fishing for B’Gill!? How could that be I thought? I grew up during the summer on a family owned cottage on a lake in Oakland county and would catch a limit of gills off the dock all day long.
This lake is feast or famine and hardly anything in between. Somedays it was like fishing in a desert. Buying a lawrance elite 7 hdi changed my fishing life. With its mapping technology I scanned the entire tobacco river side as well as a large portion of the Tittabawase River lakes system on the East side of the reservoir and got to know the lake and found some amazing fish populations.
Sometimes I would prefish and find schools of crappie for an future outing with a friend or family member and the next day they would be gone! I would have a few secondary spots lined up and we would usually do pretty good because I knew the lake. I mapped it.
Lately with my Jon boat sidelined ive been dragging a kayak. It is a very limited way to fish. Covering a lot of water is tough to do and im fishing an area of the lake that is not very productive. Ive found this skinny water bite that is very satisfying way to fish. Like ambushing your prey… very different from dropping your bait in a school of fish and cranking em in.
I was on the lake for four hours and id say 2.5 hrs was fishing and the rest was exploring and making observations. The bite was slow but I found some quality fish that no one else is fishing. There are miles of heavily weeded shoreline along wixom lake and im finding a lot of it does not hold fish.
I usually curse the lake but love it at the same time
