Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

2010316-KERSWILL LAKE… Text book crappie late ice… that would be the proper title for today’s outing… what a blast… nonstop action all afternoon long. Found the crappie cruising the deeper basins using the whole vertical water column… caught them 5ft under the ice down to 2ft off the bottom at 22 ft. Waxies tipped on a pink tungsten jig was the meal ticket for the day. Many of the schools occupied the water column just off the bottom up 4 – 6 ft. dropped the jig past them and teased them on the way up. They didn’t chase the jigs far… eye level to a foot above. Lake ice was at 13” and fading fast. Today’s targets were eater between 7 and 11.25”. However 10” was hard to come by out of these holes. The limit was 10 combined fish for the day out of this lake and I filled that quickly.

I DON’T WANT THIS ICE TO END!!!! LOL

Jim this was my favorite crappie lake last year.... i caught many 13 to 14 inch (big for michigan) crappies here last summer... i just happened to stick with a small school of fish small in size through a couple holes ... i'm always hoping for the Master Angler... but i was just as happy to catch and keep the eaters. a friend caught a 16" class out of the spot i was fishing last summer.

Looks like both white and black crappies in the mix.

With the bulk of the crappie running small in this lake, one would wonder why they have only a 10 fish limit on them. At Marylands Deep Creek Lake there is a 10 fish limit on yellow perch. But that is to prevent the overharvesting of big perch that average close to 14 inches some days. 13-inchers are the average there, and most ice anglers who fish it often get one or two 15 inch class fish per season.

Late ice is always good for fillets, and again, those are the fish to harvest...good job!
