Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

i guess i finished the season and never personally labeled as my personal best ... but here it is just short of 10 inches. i was getting so close to that citation gill and didn't want to jinx my panfish good fortune

the fish in the picture was broader but i made the mistake at taking the picture at a forty-five to the fish. i was astounded how beautiful this fish was... in august.

tony thanks on the tip about the eyes. i never knew that.

the thing about this lake is that it is very publicly fished. fish are culled and the largest are usually kept.

talking with fisherman in the pontoon boats that heavily fish the panfish say they have caught them up to 8.5" and they catch their limits regularly... stock up on the freezers etc. no one fishes the way i do with tipped ice jigs drop shotting fishing the deep breaks.

there  is a heavy population of sub 6 inchers you could catch all day long. ....these need to be fished down.

It appears to me that those fish may have come up a little short in the food department when they were younger. Certainly genetics plays a role, but judging from the size of the eyeball this fish may have a few years on it. They have the length that corresponds to maturity, but the girth doesn't match up. Still a great fish, and may yet hit that elusive 10" mark!

heres a beauty caught two days later in the same spot... they look young but long out of this lake... many ten inchers here next year.

admittedly not a pretty fish... but no matter how i measured i could not stretch it to 10" ... lol. if it was a bass in a tournament these are the fish that get you fined for being short. hoping the next 10" class fish is a saucer fish but all my fish thus far fit the long profile. i caught several between 9.5" and 10 that morning. that really looked like fast growers and young for their size fish. next year they should be over ten in that spot.

9.94"? What are you using to measure length SS, a laser? lol....... Seriously, that's a good fish. She's skinny, and her eyes are large, but she's got the length! Next time!
