looks like you have them figured out Ken!! real nice p;seed buddy!!
thanks guys!
i fished parallel to a flooded gravel road bed that harbors a lot of spawners in the spring. i was adding on to my Wixom lake topo map when i noticed panfish close to the bottom and tight to the edge of the weeds. fishing back to back cold fronts.so weedlines stop at 12 ft on this reservoir so i concentrated my efforts at that depth
Great find Ken. Looks like a nice day of tanning as well.
The opercular tab is large and broad, like a male bluegill, yet has a very slight white crescent on the edge of it. The lower cheek and jaw region has the wavy blue lines of the pumpkinseed. Banding on the sides are a bluegill trait. The customary dark 'blotch' found on the soft, top dorsal base of a pure bluegill is absent.
Pretty sure it's a great hybrid. I thought it was only a matter of time untill you ran into some of these, with all the 'seeds and bluegills you have been catching this summer, I figured there had to be some overlap of prime spawning areas for both species.
Great fish!!! Looks like some bluegill genetics involved there... :)
no red edged gill flap
Ken...I think this fish is a big male pumpkingill...great fish!
