Look at the nice carp guitar. By the way Michael, beetle grubs are the best to catch bass, carp, and catfish on. The body fluid released, based on the chromatography, has the same profound 45% fluid as the catawba worms, which is an ultimate fresh bait to use. It appears you also use a few soldier fly larvae on one of the hooks.

I've flipped chips for worms. I flip the stepping stones that run off my patio, they are always good for about a dozen worms.

Anybody else ever flipped over cow patties to find worms? Used to do that all the time when I was a kid. usually worked pretty well, provided the patty was the correct consistency....not too wet, not too dry........

I'm a grubber too; I am starting my own worm bed today. Ill be going with wigglers this time.
I usually turn over a log or two when I'm near the water, as well, and have been trying to figure out how to trap cockroaches out around the garden - another good natural bait.
I've been fly fishing since last summer, but won't turn my nose up at natures larder.

I was expecting catfish with that setup at that spot.

So, I am pretty motivated to not buy bait. I get my worms from the compost pile- they're small and so soft they're practically water-soluble compared to nightcrawlers and commercial red wigglers or whatever. But they're free and plentiful.

And the grubs are so big and plump they just had to be worth a shot. My usual approach is to get 2 lines out for catfish and forget about them while I chase bluegills and now crappies. I was using cut bluegill and shiners (caught on compost worms), but when the grubs started turning up, it was natural. They seem to attract anything. I've gotten channel cats, bullhead, and now the carp, and up at Four Mile Run they get stolen all the time by bluegill when I'm after catfish. There were several days at 4MR when I couldn't turn my back on my line because it was ringing so much. In my best afternoon there, I got 6 channel cat on the grubs- almost enough to make catfish boring and drive me to start going for bass.

I'm happy to share what worked this time. I was at the fishing pier on Ft Belvoir. It's in Pohick Bay, a wide slow backwater of the tidal Potomac, south of Washington DC.

My bait was a natural grub worm, on a medium circle hook, on a bottom rig in maybe 6-8 ft of water. The tide was low but rising. The bait was out there like two hours while I chased crappie before she bit. The water was fairly warm- the crappie weren't too cold to the touch when they came in.

I get the grub worms from my compost pile. You can see a fresh one in the picture, as well as what's left of the one the carp bit.

All my pics are boxed up at the moment. (closing on the new house tomorrow and then moving everything). Once I get settled in a little I'll see if I can find some Iraq fishing pics and put up a little blog
