Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Tried to tie a new pattern tonight. Size 16, midge emerger. I'm using a foam post to provide visibility. I'm hoping the fly hangs down. I'll have to give it a try.

I ended up tying four. These are the two I would accept. The other two are perfectly fishable, but one I goofed on tying off; the hackle isn't right, and the other one, well, I tied down the wire for the rib, but forgot to actually wrap the wire to make the rib.

There are many different patterns and techniques out there that I have very little skill performing, much less even attempted.  On another website for fly-tying and fishing, I'd probably be classified as an upper-level beginner, or lower-level Intermediate.  I will admit that I have an eye for detail, the borders on the obsessive.  That's just the artist in me coming out.  You should see some of the Native American Beadwork I've made.

ALLEN you are too modest !!!!! I've looked at lots of your fly patterns since I"ve been on here a year and am always impressed by the ingenuity and quality of your work . Keep em coming for all of us novices to copy or at least attempt to copy........

Thanks for the tip, Steve.  I tied these on dry fly hooks, but am contemplating using scud hooks.

David, I am but a humble beginner to the exact Art and subtle Science that is fly-tying.

If you want them to hang in the water column try tying a small piece of lead wire lengthways alongthe hook near the bend.  A drop of super glue then wrap over with your thread of choice.  On a #16 hook it only takes about 1/8 of .020 lead wire.  The foam still float in the surface film and the lead overcomes the hackle to make it float vertical.  Another option for fishing that size fly is on a dropper behind a surface bug of some kind or s strike indicator.

Allen I often have problems knowing what to do next and often forgetting a process all together. Great looking flies Allen.

Yes, they look good.  But the real test is if they get eaten......
