Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

My schedule was light this morning, and I had almost an hour of free time. I haven't fished in weeks, so I took off and hit the water. Tough conditions....water temp was 47 degrees, overcast and cool, with a slight breeze and misty rain.

I only managed four gills. Sorry to say, but I'm behind in my winter fishing prep. Specifically, I need to order spikes...waxworms just won't cut it in this colder water.

This was my biggest fish, probably around 9.5". he took one of Dick Tabbert's jigs, which I intend to use for testing purposes in the spring/summer. Tipped with waxworms. I asked Dick to make me something that was basically, just color....no legs, tail, hair, or flash. Just something to brighten up the protein. And Dick really came through, with a variety of jigs, in many colors. I used red/black combo today, as that's one of my favorites for cold water gills.

Thanks John and you'll have to thank Tony it was his brainstorm. John I'm just the jig maker here to learn and participate in any way I can and when you think I know it all guess what I'm still learning and it's a learning I can never get enough of and love it.

Here's a blurry shot of the jig, with a nickel for comparison.

Thanks so much for the info Tony and couldn't see if it had a tail or not. Got me thinking again now , OH OH ......

No tail Tooty, just a red jighead with a body around 5/8" long, half red and the other half black.

HEY TONY , did Dicks bait have a tail on it . This has been perplexing me for years and know of lots of tailess patterns for trout , but generally gill and panfish flies have one .Ants are one exception of course and a few others , but not many. JUST CURIOUS is all............
