Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This was the big fish of the trip and my new PB brown trout. Not a huge fish, but from what I understand this creek doesn't have as good of success rates for the fish to survive one year to the next, since it's really a cool water stream and can get too warm for them in the summer.

Yep, the added waxy was definitely the ticket this weekend.

Very life-like plastic. Like all things, if it looks good, but don't have any taste/scent to it, there maybe a chance it get eaten. Waxy and it oozing scent on a life-like bait, it's an automatic dinner bell.

This is the bait we were using tipped with a waxy. They had been sitting in my box for a few years now; I think this was the first time they hit the water. We tied them on after trying a few other baits without success. A couple fish hit it untipped.

Nice catch. Too bad there aren't many of these in the wild any more.

Ken, Clear Creek is one of three locations the DNR stocks browns. It's the southern-most stream in OH and can get too warm for them during the summer so you don't see too many big ones coming from here. The biggest one I've seen pics of from this place is a 20" fish. The majority of the fish caught are the 6-9" fish stocked by the DNR each fall. Other places in the state, like the Mad River hold some nicer fish. Would love to get into some biggers ones, but the little guys were still plenty of fun on light tackle.

Thanks everyone. John, we caught these fish on some stonefly imitation plastics I found in my box tipped with a waxworm with a small split shot about 18" up the line. Casted to the the front of some pools and runs and let it drift to the fish. Most hit on the bottom, but some aggressive fish hit it one the fall. Had a great time this weekend with my dad. It was his first time catching browns and my second.
