good size drum there John ; no doubt it was a real rod bender;; never heard of those called a sheaphead tho;; I have caught salt water sheepsheads;; looked a lot different than that;; and great eating to !!

Nice input lately !Thanks Dick, Carl,  Allen and Jason! I have a few of those Erie Dearie harnesses but have yet to use them. My only Sheepshead came on a Crankbait  shad pattern .Either a Cotton Cordell or a Shad Rap ,forget.

Jason they are considered trash fish. You catch a bunch of them before you can catch a walleye but thats because they are trash fish and most everybody throws them back. Now we have and explosion on Gobi's little bait steelier s throughout the water column.

I'd enjoy catching the sheepshead. Now that you mention it, it seems I recall the guide on our boat not being real happy about us hooking the one we did. I'm guessing they're considered trash fish up there?

We called then sheephead with many more unpleasant descriptions.

Sheepshead = Freshwater Drum, correct?

That rig could catch any fish in any water with a nice fat crawler hanging off of it.

Use to fish Lake Erie a lot and that harness catches many species like Sheephead, white perch, white bass, catfish, perch and the list goes on. Back then my go to bait was a chartreuse Erie Derie a lead head with a harness built on it.

Yes. Crawler Harness. That's what it was. I looked up a picture and that's what it was for sure. Now that I think about it, I don't see why that rig couldn't work for most other species as well.

I know I've read about folks bottom bouncing jigs out of boats in the Detroit River.  I tied up a few Crawler Harness a couple years ago, but have never gotten around to using them.  I do know that folks that are die-hard Crawler Harness rigs will keep a large stock of various color blades and beads so they can customize their rigs to meet local conditions.

Adding a stinger hook to a jig like that, almost sounds like a Quick-Strike rig used for Pike.

When on Eerie, we bounced the jigs on bottom and always had a stinger hook. We all caught several walleye, and a nice freshwater drum. We also employed the use of a nightcrawler rig that had spinners built into it but with less luck. We hooked and pulled in TONS of zebra mussels while fishing.
