Drum Family Portrait...

Yes I see now that they are related to the saltwater red drum and salt water black drum

Freshwater Drum are closely related to Saltwater Drum.  A "Sheepshead" in saltwater is a completely different fish.  A "Sheepshead" from freshwater is just a Freshwater Drum.

I have cooked a couple Freshwater Drum.  The first one I poached whole, and found it too tough to be worth eating.  The second one was just last year, shortly before I moved.  I'd heard that you could poach/simmer small cubes of Freshwater Drum, chill it, and it would be kind of like Shrimp Cocktail.  Again, I found it to be a little tougher than Shrimp, and it didn't taste like Shrimp.

I have since read that you can take the fillet, and cut it into really small, thin strips, then bread them in seasoned breading, following by a swim in hot oil.  The end result is supposed to be like fried clam strips.  I don't know if they'll taste like clam strips, but honestly, do you get much "clam" flavor in those?  It's more about the flavor of the breading, and whatever sauce you dunk it in.

I'd be happy with those size drum. When we were on Erie, we caught somewhere around 20 walleye and only 1 drum.

slip stinker;; the salt water sheepsheads i caught in Mobile bay next to Fla . we caught on live  small crabs; fished around pilings; they had such a light bite; kind of like a moskito landing on your arm;; very hard to catch; would spin in circles when hooked bend a  rod to ; LOL;; related to a fresh water drum ??  no idea about that; but the salt water sheepshead is great eating !!

i havnt caught a sheepshead in awhile ... but i thought the same thing about being a trash fish... they 're called freshwater drum. related distantly saltwater drum?

a few years back i m watching WFN and Canadien Sportfishing they refer to them as very tasty... got to give it a try someday

Carl I'm sure it will take walleyes but maybe not the numbers and it would have to be weighted with more flash.

ok;; Dicky;; why wouldnt your;; gilly worm; be a good try for walleye??  its rigged with the hooks already;; looks terrific;; has the right; flash material.  just wondering !!!  John;; Dicky;s ; gilly worm is ;  braid line with 3 or 4 hooks tied in; chenile over it tied in; then either;; rubber skirt; or marabou and some krystal flash;; roughly;; 3 to 5 inches long.  B P S is having a crappie madness starting this week end; taking a few select items;  for show and tell; (  I know a few of those local pro guys;; love to agreaviate them;; they always are amazed at the stuff we make here.  I keep trying to get those guys to join bbg site to !!!
