Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

AFTER READING JANS COMMENT ABOUT A BUCKET LIST LETS START ONE IN MY GROUP: 10 ITEMS ONLY OR LESS ABOUT THE GOOD OLE DAYS ON FAMILY , TACKLE  , FISHING OR ANYTHING PERTAINING TO THAT STUFF.

  HERE'S MINE:

#1 I WISHED I HAD TIME to say things to the kids and they had time to listen about old memories , and had the forsight to ENGAGE MY BRAIN BEFORE I ENGAGE MY MOUTH.
#2  I wished I could go back to the days of POT BELLIED STOVES at the local tackle and gun shops, AND WAS ABLE TO REMEMBER ALL THAT THE OLD FELLAS HAD TO SAY. Wisdom and knowledge is on the wain today and not many old timers left to pass the knowledge on.
#3 I REALLY WISH WE COULD GO BACK to the days when you could walk anywere with a gun or fishing rod in your hand and no one who saw you questioned what you were doing as a kid. I really wish my grandkids could live in those days. You always closed gates, picked up any mess you made, and left the place cleaner than you found it. WE DID IT OUT OF RESPECT FOR SOMEONE ELSES PROPERTY.

#4 My personal favorite: TACKLE, WISHED someone made rods , reels, and lures like they used to . Technology has made everything with out  soul or character today .  THE RODS AND TACKLE OF OLD was spoken of with reverence in the old days around the stove in the old shops. That's because it was at the time very expensive to obtain. Now I  have 20-30 old Wonderods and back in the day when I was a kid if you had one you were the luckiest guy in the world!!
ALL MY OPINIONS OF COURSE ARE MINE AND some may go along with em.

Commenting on your #3 item, David........ I remember as a kid of 14 hitch hiking out to a hunting spot just past the city limit sign with our shotguns in hand, and people never worried a bit about picking us up. We would then hitch hike home with the game we shot in our jackets.

VINCE  ,SADLY THOSE DAYS OF OUR YOUTH are LONG GONE and now the kids would be greeted by the swat team. WELL I guess that's how it goes but the memories never fade, at least not for me . Glad to have lived in those years of innocence and wonder of what the next day would bring when we were not in school.

You know what's really a shame? I'm only 50, and I remember so clearly how much better even California was as a place to live when I was a kid. Being a teenager in SoCal in the seventies was amazing! People a little older tell me it was even better in the sixties, so the downhill slide goes back a ways.  I don't think it's a slide anymore, though. It's a headlong rush to something bad.  Zero tolerance for this, zero tolerance for that. Stand up to a bully in school today and you'll be punished at least as much as the bully, maybe more. Probably my proudest moment of high school was when I stood up to a bully in my first year, actually decisively won the fight that followed from that decision, and got away with the whole thing :-) Probably couldn't get away with it today, even though the fight happened off campus and I didn't start it, just finished it.

In grade school,  every kid who had his own bat brought it to school during "softball season." Gloves, too. The only thing that was banned were hardballs. The school also had a supply of bats in every classroom, in a box near the door, and at least one catcher's mask for every classroom, at least in the upper grades. I can just imagine how much poop would hit the fan if a kid brought a bat to school today. So far as I can tell, they pretty much aren't even allowed to play softball or any other game where somebody might get hurt, and both we and the kids are the poorer for it. I'm amazed they don't duct tape each kid into a ball of cotton and styrofoam at the start of the school day, for safety :p

JB ,
HOW RIGHT YOU ARE ON ALL ACCOUNTS!!!  If the folks today aren't carefull they are raising a bunch of MAMBY PAMBY KIDS who don't know what it was like in the old days. I see lots of kids today that apparently are afraid to get dirty.
Now all of my grandkids are dirt friendly and especially the grand daughters seem to walk out side and dirt is a magnet to them. Add a little water and WHALLA, MUD FORMS ON EVERY INCH OF EM!

ONE thing I remember from my youth is going outside in the morning and all the kids were out doing something, BUT THE KEY WORD HERE IS OUTSIDE! Now drive around town any were and there are no kids playing anywere in sight. Must be in the house on the computoid like I am right now!!!!!!! GOt to go outside for a while and get back to reality here .

not only that david,no more pick up sports games.got friends whose little leaguers train like the white sox.never see kids playing ball unless it is part of an organized sport.when i was kid growing up in chicago we used to take the bus and fish golf course and cemetary ponds and once in a while lake michigan.a lot of my buddies dads were chicago cops and left their guns on shelf or on top of the fridge.would never ever have thought of touching them.we live in the information age now where real knowledge and especially common sense and wisdom are severely lacking.i fish little ponds and lakes that used to be somewhat crowded but not anymore as everyone that does fish seems to think they are on t.v.big expensive boats and clubs and tournaments.i fish alone most times anymore.oh well more fish for me i guess.hey as they say the world turns

JIM , RICK, VINCE, THANKS FOR ALL THE COMMENTS AND YOU OF COURSE RIGHT .

I don't know were it will end up but todays kids are put under EXTREME DURESS when it comes to doing anything of an organized sport. It seems the parents are trying to feed off the kids success for their own failures in life . Whether it is football , baseball, track , hockey or anything. I say let the kids decide how far and hard they want to take the sport.
HOW ABOUT EVERYONE JUST RELAXING , TAKING A DEEP BREATH AND just go back to simplicity of kids having fun. Guess it will never change and that's a shame cause kids can't be kids anymore . The drive to accomplish something is the #1 priority and as far as I'm concerned it should be the last. Remember when we all cheered the star baseball player, football player, or best shooter? Well now parents seem to think if they push their kids far enough and hard enough they can make it . Doesn't always apply or turn out that way. There can only be so many Babe Ruth's , Dick Butkus's, Walter Paytons, or Eienstiens  for that matter. It's a shame really cause we are robbing the kids of an innocence of youth that only comes once in a lifetime. If my grandkids are ever in sports I'll tell both my sons to take it easy and just let em be...... Watch the coaches because in most situations they may be the culprit trying to get the kids to the coaches level and not the kids level.........

I remember bringing my first 12ga. to school, and showing it off in the parking lot. I was so proud of it. It was a single shot Harrington Richardson that I bought for 12.00 at a pawn shop in town. That was a common thing to do when one of us got a new gun. No one gave it a second thought back then. Now the school would be locked down,  news crews would set up camp at the school, the kid would be have to be mentally evaluated once the swat team subdued him, and he would never be allowed anywhere near another school again.  Even though I sold that gun many years ago, the good memories of it live on. Ah the 60's were so much simpler.

OH VINCE HOW RIGHT YOU ARE . NOW when I talk to young folk about this stuff they look at me like I"m nuts and say , are you serious that you did that kind of stuff as a  kid !!!!!!  NO one who didn't live through those days will never have that chance again Vince and it's really sad too. The kids today , and it's not their fault either, say to one another did you see that new game they got out now?!!!!!!

My mentors when I was a kid all had the same thing in mind , FISHING AND HUNTING and I listened eagerly to their stories !
Vince you and I are the lucky ones on here because we do have memories to share and take the time to do so. My memories are filled with old tackle , guns , and gear and the places they took me to in my mind and reality . When I'm always talking about kids they come in two categories to me . 50 years and younger and kids 10 and under. The 50 year olds in most cases were the end of our era of freedom to wander around with a shotgun or a .22 caliber rifle out in the woods. Sometimes now I just go for a walk in the woods with my old rifle and sit under a tree and take a little snooze . SImple stuff to be sure but won't give it up till I can't walk anymore . My how the times have changed, and all new stuff is not bad , just not the same as the good ole days and times gone by buddy........
  TOOTY

Vince and Tooty you sure are right life in the sixtys was grand. Im 68 and I remember being in high school during hunting season, all of us kids. Most being from the country carried a shotgun, and rifles in our car to school so we could hit the fields as soon as school got out. It was just the way we lived back then.No one ever got into trouble. We were raised to respect firearms and most kids I knew had father that tought them how to use a firearm. I remember my first shotgun a single shot 410, I was seven and it took both hands to pull the hammer back and dad had to cut about 4" off the stock so I could get it on the sholder to shoot. I remembe my first days hunting rabbits. Dad, his friend and I would hunt the old railroad tracks. I would get to walk the tracks while they walked on each side in the brush and briers and kick up the rabbits. You get to be a pretty good shot when you only have one chance. I was the most fun.

#1. Noted. One thing gained about shooting your mouth off before your brain is engaged build kids' characters, as long as what coming out the mouth is full of discipline, follow by words of love and and loving actions.  Trust me, what come out of my mouth most of the time, it's like drill sergeant on a rampage. However, they always know my words of love and caring action followed. That's what critical.

#2. Wish I could have all the old timers gathered into one room, with full mental power to recall the good old days. The old timers I tried to listened to, they went back a bit too far..It's like listening to them when they were 10 years old without the wisdom and knowledge forged from decades of personal experiences. Wish I could just sit in front of y'all and listen for hours on end every day until you croak. I'll just absorb knowledge and make tons of notes. I know my brain won't hold it all.

#3. Hm..don't AZ and TX allow that still? LOL Kids nowadays lost the respects for others' properties. It's all because the overly busy generations of parents, now being there for their kids to teach them what's right and wrong. My wife and I sacrifice luxury, and focus on our kids' discipline and wisdom instilled into their minds. Our 5 years old boy is a bit too much for us right now. He acts so much like me, it's like a mini me. One of me in the household is more than enough. However, that will produce a new generation of responsible leader.

#4. AMEN! This is why I'm looking for those who have knowledge of the old days, and equipment that actually have the makers' souls imbued into the works they do.  True dedicated masters that create tools to their greatest potential deserve to be cherished and recognized.

Like you, this is merely my opinions. I still am in the process of creating my bucket list. My bucket list is quite simple when I form it. I live simple, and I will die simple. Roast my body, and toss my ash. No need for the ground. Dust I came from, and to dust I will return. EAT ME FISH!

#4.

LEO,

YOU HAVE WISDOM FAR BEYOND YOUR YEARS! I agree with all you said here and thanks for the input.

ALL OF US SEPERATED BY MILES AND MILES of road are bonded together in common beliefs and values .

My youngest son and I are alot alike and like your 5 year old we sometimes but heads , but eventually we both come to our senses and all is well. When your son is a bit older he'll see your wisdom .

Leo I got to reply to this one again !!  #2 of your bucket list is very likely never to happen in this lifetime, too bad.

I could learn as much as you if seated in the presence of Jeffrey , Jim G. , Steve T. and many many more on here . Kind of reminds me of a John Denver song were they are all sitting round the camp fire telling stories. Could you imagine aaaaaaaall of us members on here all getting together like say at the Crappie Cabin of Lofr , for  a week or so , HEAVEN !!!!!

#4 YUP INCINERATE ME TOO !!!!! TOSSED TO THE FOUR WINDS OVER KENTS POND WOULD BE FITTING FOR ME ....
NOT MUCH REVERENCE for yesteryears gear either , as many will agree with. People who made that stuff were Fisihing pioneers and innovators. What we have on here is a bunch of Bug and Fly innovators of the first order , and glad to be counted as a contributor on here , as you are Leo.....
Can you imagine the stories from LOFR, DICK T. , and many more of the folks on here round the campfire, that would be priceless .........
