Silk?

Braided Dacron - fly backing line.

i do not fly fish, well, have done a little but not at all up on the language

what is fly backing line?  not sure what it is

You don't fill a fly reel fully with fly line.bits too expensive and takes a curled set too easily.
So, an inner course of backing line is wound in first. On top of this the working fly line is wound, usually 30-50 yards worth..
Essentially, it is a filler line.
The line used to do this is called backing line and is as close to the old braided Dacron as I've seen on the market today.

"You don't fill a fly reel fully with fly line."

hmmmmmmm,  now you got me, i have a small fly rod, one that i used in the mountains on small streams, it is full of line,  if i used a backing then i would have to cut perfectly good line.  i am from missouri man you gonna have to show me

Backing is smaller line diameter, so it doesn't add as much in spool diameter as you might think. On small rods, it is mostly "just in case". I hardly ever even see the skinny line on WF, much less the backing...

When you buy fly line you don't get a hundred yards or more, as is normal with other lines like mino or fluorocarbon..
Just one example, selected at random, illustrates this.
Cabelas "Prestige" saltwater line is sold in lengths of 90 FEET.
That's 30 yards... So you don't have to cut it, because you don't get much.

As Andy suggests, the backing line also adds length to the overall spool, should you need it. Most fly guys consider an epic fight one that, "gets you into the backing."

i am having a hell of a time with this format?  do not want to piss anyone off but to me this thing is so cluttered it is not functional>

colored letters in front of a fish where it is easy to miss

a bluegill with a yellow popper as a back ground?  difficult for me to read or follow really hard to follow

when i added the discussion about fishing line there was a "add a discussion link"  i used it to add the topic, now adding a discussion is gone??

sorry but i do not like it,  would have been here more but  it does not work for me  not even sure how to read the replies to my original post

wanted to add this

Did a google search for Trent river mouth and Neuse river and a good working photo came up and i have all kinds of questions for that area but this web site makes it so hard to input. wanted to discuss fishing this area and how to do it

It might help you to know this site is funded out of one mans pocket, Dr. Bruce Condello.
Bruce is a stand up guy and this is very generous of him. Most people who USE websites and forums are unaware of the cost to operate and maintain them.
This singular feature also keeps it free of advertising and other, more objectionable "clutter."
It is cranky and usual, perhaps. At the same time, to change that and make it more "normal" would cost more money.
Through a corps of attentive moderators it is also kept free of those who would spoil the good will of our benefactor with trash talk, bad attitudes and endles bickering.
Give it a chance- you won't find a more dedicated group of men and women anywhere.

the people are great, and i like the site for what it is, but the mechanics drive me nuts, took 20 minutes to get the add discussion to appear

but i know squat about computers or web pages

as for myself-- never have put backing on my fly reels-- never needed it-- yet!!   i usually just go after blue gills- or crappie with my fly rod;; but have had several real nice catfish and bass on it;;  double fun !!

Ira-- sometimes when you want to add to a post- or a discussion-- you have to -- join that group-- first!! then you can add your comments... check the heading bar first to see if you have to join the ( group) !!
