Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Restocked one of my favorite pattern recently as I had lost a few to sumps and the ever dreaded over hanging branch.  Two things that make this one of my favorites is that is simple to tie and effective when fished.  It is basically a wet fly pattern composed of crystal flash for a tail, black micro chenille and chartreuse crystal chenille for the body, black hackle for a collar, all wrapped on a size 10 hook.  It works great as a dropper fly or fished by its self when the fish are shallow and want a slow fall.  It can be tied weighted and fished deep if that's where they are and works just as well. It's a good fly for beginners to gain confidence at the vise and with the fly rod.  Here a few catches from a recent trip that liked it.Red ear approved.....Give this one a try, you'll find it simple and effective, which is a good combination.

Rex it looks kinda small what is the hook size.

Nice Rex! I got a few of the similar. Will try yours too. I got a few cases for 300+ flies for storage. Will keep yours in my arsenal too.

Thanks Rex all I had to do was read. I'll have to get the magnifiers out for that.

I've tried this in other color combinations , but black and chartreuse seems to be the best producer in the waters I fish.

So very true. Black, chartreuse, and a hit of yellow and/or red, and it'll be a magnet. Once it turns winter, good luck in a getting a bite no matter what color. However, a live wiggling worm will entice them to bite. A bleeding nightcrawler will infact force them to bite even when they don't want to. Oh, not to mention a wiggling waxworm or a fly that looks like one.
