Amazingly Sarah, there are no bait or tackle shops within 40 miles west of Baltimore until you get to Frederick or Thurmont, which are even farther away. A bunch of em on the east side that tightly borders the Chesapeake Bay. My closest bait shop is in Hanover, PA and is called B&B Baits...small local shop that has some cool stuff. In nearby York county, just above the PA line, there are 23 bait shops listed in the directories.
hi Sarah ,like Jim i have to drive 40+ miles to find a real bait shop,i live in Bayou Chicot Louisiana not a lot going on here . it's a small rural community if you do not fish or hunt, not a lot to do ,but i live in a camp in the woods just a couple of miles from some great fishing and we have good hunting just out our back door.
we do a lot of our shopping on the computer, ebay, cabela's exc. but i do like to take my grandsons on a trip to the big city .there is an Academy Sporting goods in Alexandria Louisiana about 40 miles north of us they have a great selection of just about everything.

gators can't climb tree.
i am lucky as far as bait shops go.i have 2 within 5 miles.one was part of a family chain that was reopened .was ed shirley now called anglers outlet in markham il.always has great selection of live bait.except crickets.they say there is no demand.even though they are only a few miles outside chicago city limits the store is very friendly.kind of place where people trade stories and trade info and misinfo of course.they buy lots of close out items so you can get some really good deals.also my favorite place online is chuck and deb .com.found this one by accident looking for cheap road runners.lots of small jigs and plastics, fly tying etc.
Hilton's Bait & Tackle in Plummer Pa was a favorite of mine,he had a small shop in his basement. When you asked for something you didn't see on display he would always go to the other room and usually would return with what you were looking for.

Sue's Bait and Tackle near Justus Lake in Venango Co. PA was another favorite .

Fergies bait and tackle near Lake Wilhelm is another.
I live in San Diego Ca. Most of the bait and tackle stores here are salt water oriented. The best store for freshwater stuff is:

Lakeside Bait & Tackle
www.lakesidebaitandtackle.com
12255 Woodside Avenue
Lakeside, CA 92040-3025
(619) 443-3859

They are a family owned business. If they do not have it in stock, they will order it for you. They are 1 of 2 local sources for crappie minnows and worms. For that reason I shop them first even if I could order a bit cheaper online. Shipping costs usually negate any savings anyway.
Dockside Outdoors located on the Raymond Road in Colchester VT. It is run by great people Ben and his dad most of the time. They open at six so you can have fresh minnows and they give a 10% discount to all veterans . Another nice feature is he has a local message board to post whats biting and where.

Piney Bay Bait Boat & Camping is my closest bait/tackle store which happens to be within 100 yards of me and within 100 yards of it on the other side of the shop is a boat access for the Arkansas River. it is run by my grandfather so for me the prices are near to nothing, but to the everyday customer he still has good prices since most of his tackle is bought from other shops that have gone out of business, his bait is by far a bargain because his count of a dozen on minnows is about 15 per. and anywhere else around here they are very strict to give you right at or below the actual amount you buy. his on-hand tackle is limited, but he is a friendly guy and if you sit down and talk with him about what you need he will look it up in his suppliers catalogs and give you a rough price that isn't much over cost and can have what you need in a few days. his baits include night crawlers, red worms, glow worms(nightcralwers that they feed something to make them green and glownthe dark) 3 different variants of minnows, bass (larger minnows ranging 3-5 inches), crappie (medium minnows ranging 2-3 inces), and rosey reds (small minnows that are the color of goldfish ranging 1-2 inches). he also has goldfish for sale, chicken livers, stink bait, frozen shad(when in stock from supplier), and an assortment of various hooks and sinkers for all kinds of fishing from panfishing to catfishing. he sells landing nets and cast nets among many other things like reels and rods and the list goes on, if he doesn't have it on hand he can order it for you for cheaper then any chain store around here can offer it. if you live in Arkansas and fish the river valley, it is on highway 64 in Knoxville right next to the boat access.
