Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

So here in the south where I live there are not a lot of people that attempt to locate schools of bluegills and shellcrackers in the middle of winter.  I am going to try this winter.  I have had a lot of success in ponds locally in the winter but never attempted on the larger lakes that I fish throughout summer.  So I need some help and advice from some of the experts here.  We are talking 1500+ acre lakes and what I am trying to find out is some likely hangouts for these schools.  I have good electronics that I trust so marking the fish once I am on them will not be an issue..... the issue is there is so much water to cover I just don't know where to begin.  Any ideas?  I will update everyone with my results as  we go through winter.....

I never understood why I am one of the few that logs pics into albums here at BBG.

i have to start doing that... very well organized John!

That may the first time in my life I was "accused" of being organized ,and deserved it Ken ! Thanks!

John, its probably because most see BBG as merely diversion. Sure, you can pick up a few tidbits from bona-fide experts, and maybe snag a few flies... But, mostly it affords the chance to express your opinion on all manner of subjects. Who doesn't love that?!

However, the are probably just a handful of users that see it as an actual TOOL to improve their efforts. I didn't - here I've been posting pics for ages on the site and only now does this "click" in!

Thanks, John, for bringing me along. You are wise in the Ways of the Force.

David , I enjoy your hyperbole regarding my wisdom! Thank you! Lol!

Beautiful pic, Shawn. Live in the south as well and don't fish lakes that large in winter here, but do fish a couple close ones on occasion of about 300 acres. Deepest water is a channel of 12 to 16 ft., and the shellcrackers can always be found there somewhere. As has been noted, fish slow and near the bottom. They do happen to spawn very near this same area, by the way, along the banks of the levee.
