Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Does anyone do any southeastern Warmouth fishing?

If so, where?

What is the best time of year to try for them?

What bait are you using?

Anyone catching them on the fly?

I don't target them.  I do catch a few every year.  I usually get them mixed in with other Sunfish, usually on the weedline, or in rocks.

I've caught them in the Spring and Summer.  Bait was usually red wrigglers / trout & panfish worms.  I have not caught them on the fly yet.

From what I understand, they'll hit anything basically, aggressive too, they'll take bass lures.

Now that I think about it, one of the first ones I caught last year hit a Bitsy Minnow.

I catch them in NE Oklahoma from late spring thru summer and I never know which fly they will take. They are excellent eating and great fun on the fly rod@!

Hello Jen,

Can you send me some pictures of the fly patterns that you're using?

Thank you.

Jason

I catch several hundred every year Jason fishing in the Carolinas........Warmouth prefer slow moving, swampy areas with heavy cover like flooded wood and tree tops.....One of the best places to catch them in the South Carolina Low Country is reservoirs like Moultrie and Goose Creek......Tidal areas like Bushy Park will hold a few in isolated spots but try heavily wooded areas in the reservoirs starting in the Spring......They spawn in slightly warmer water than other sunfish, preferring sustained water temperatures of 70 degrees and they like gravel areas to spawn if available........look around areas where man has left his mark installing boat launches or power lines for example.....They love hitting popping bugs during the Summer and can be relentless, they will normally strike a bug until you either hook them or miss......

If you go under the "groups" tab you'll find my group....Wild About Warmouth....you may find some interetsing things there........I will send you an invite to the group......Hope the information helps you get started.....

Where are you fishing now Jason?

I caught several Warmouth yesterday, drop-shotting live minnows to the bottom under a crappie dock, then giving a couple cranks up off the bottom.  They were tiny things!  Maybe all of 4" long!  But boy, did they hit that minnow.

Jason.....I too don't target them, but I catch a lot of them every year. Almost always in weeds or grass that is 2-3 feet deep near shore. I seem to catch most of them on an MM minnow (see Bluegill Fly Tying group, look for Improved MM minnow.)

Their big mouth can easily grab most any bluegill fly. Minnow imitations seem to work best for the Warmouth.......Don in SC

I've caught them around the parts of SC I fish. Used to get them in FL, too.
My avatar pic shows me holding one from the South Edisto river. I pull them from wood and cover, mostly, using worms as bait.
I don't know anyone who targets them.
I am not familiar with Warmouth. From the avitar pic it looks like a very dark colored black crappie. Are they much different?

Jason, Sorry ti took so long to get back to you with the fly.

Here is a picture of the fly. http://bigbluegill.com/photo/purple-sulu?context=user

The catch was more fun than the tying of the fly. http://bigbluegill.com/photo/in-this-corner?context=user
