Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This hole is known for lots and LOTS of hungry Green Sunfish.  I wanted to play a while.....

I took that foxtail jig I tied with a 1/32nd oz head.  I clipped that jig to a jg-spinner frame.  I was hoping the added vibration would help set the hair to moving like crazy, even with a steady retrieve.

Once I arrived on the bank, I made a cast out into deeper water.  On that retrieve, I learned three things:

A)  1/32 oz is a little light.  I need to go up to at least a 1/16 oz jighead.  I will probably do this, soon.

B)  The Green Sunnies like it.  I got a couple bites on that retrieve.

3)  From what I could see, the vibration of the blade didn't really get the hair moving as well.  Looks like I need to perfect a way to flare the hair a bit.

I might not really worry about flaring the hair for a bit.  I caught a BUNCH of Greenies.  And two LMBs, even though they were only 6" long.

Oh, and the white Koi survived the Winter.  I didn't see the Orange one, yet......

Sounds like fun, Allen. What type of hair do you have on  your jigs? Most natural materials don't have a ton of action but hackle or marabou would probably be best if you're looking for movement in the water or pulsating. I'm not sure if a blade will really affect the motion of the material itself, unless you can get a big enough blade to disturb the water the material will be traveling through. I agree about the light jig thing, I've been trying to cast my jigs (I have no idea how heavy they are but I would guess either 1/32 or 1/64th oz.) and it aint easy getting them very far!

Nathan, it's Fox fur.  It actually has a really nice action, moves really nicely.  I was hoping to use the vibration of the blade to get the entire frame and jig to vibrate as well.  Like you said, I probably need a bigger blade.  The frame I used has what appears to be a size 3 Colorado blade on it.  I do have some bigger Colorado blades, I may swap one out and give it a try as well.

A longer rod, lighter line, bigger line guides, and a bigger spool on the reel will help with distance.  Maybe I should have used my Light action 7' rod.  It has a 2500 series reel, and 10 lbs test braid.  It's thinner than the 4 lbs test mono on my UL rig.

Let me know how it works out, I have never tried the "spin-jig" thing but have always wanted to, sounds like you already know what works though.

I like Greenies. Being that they are elongated with a large mouth, you could actually consider them a "mini" bass and are fun to catch.

My Mom has a bunch of Koi and she loves them. She has a few that are almost as big as torpedoes.

Ben, that's the main reason I keep coming back to this hole.  I love how aggressive they are.  I guess that's why Greenies are one of the parents for Hybrid Sunnies.  Of course, we have Hybrids at the pond at work.....love fishing for those as well.

glad you  got out to fish a little allen!!   any day fishing is better than none!!!
