Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

The past few seasons it’s been season outdoing the last. Knowledge base on top of knowledge base. Building on some great info from this site and time on the water. I’m anticipating and looking forward to even better results with more citation fish. Anyway that’s the game plan.

Last year was the season of fishing TINY. Thin UL Lines loaded on tiny 50 series reels and light UL rods tossing tiny baits in front of fish targets…quantities of quality panfish and trophy SMB. Tossed the baits into thick cover with reckless abandon. Tiny presentations under slip bobbers thrown next to thick weed slop and weed pockets. Mid day fishing out of the kayak in less than two feet of water and tagging quality fish. Never really had another fishing boat come close to me fishing. it was like i had the lake to myself. looking forward to making some more good memories in the upcoming season.

Looking forward to any hints suggestions or comments from the BBG membership… sharing is the best way to learn and progress!

hope everyone a successful "2016 Open Water Season"

…ice fishing 2016 is over... so you find alternative ways to savor the addiction of the tug on the line. Walleye/Northern Pike season ends midnight 03.14 so a possibility exists to set the hook into something solid ... like say a "Walleye" just below the dams. There is an opportunity some eager males have reached the rivers end in pre spawn mode. Very likely we are able to check this out Monday.

GOOD LUCK ON THE UP COMING FISHING SEASON; HOPE YOU CATCH THAT BIG; ELUSIVE 10 INCH  PLUS BLUE GILL SLIP STINKER !

…thanks Carl!

i was hoping to tag that B'Gill thru the ice this season... lol...

i may be adding a couple more BOW to the mix this open water season ... it could prove interesting in the long haul.

i did come very close a few times last year... i feel like im on the right track.

good luck this season also!... when do you usually start B'Gill fishing?

…Daylight Savings time is now upon us... Ive always looked at this date as turning the corner to open water fishing, warmer temps and the introduction of spring. winter and spring transition could take may weeks or months out of a fisherman's seasons here in Michigan.

20160314-went out Monday to test the walleye bite… upon arrival to the dam site we noticed the water was slack and the water high. We hurriedly rigged and made our way down to the shoreline settling in position between a few fisherman working away. The fisherman to the left of me landed a keeper straight away before I got my first cast in. the word was others out in the boats also caught a few with a reported 8LBer plus to a lucky fisherman. A few casts in and they started up the dam again and the bite suddenly stopped. Biteless for a couple hours we decided to pack up and head to another lake for some catch n release SMB and another hopeful walleye bite in town close to another dam. SMB’s refused to bite so we crossed the street to the local dam site. One walleye was caught amongst the small group already present.. bite seemed very slow or the fish were not in yet. Got checked by the local DNR then called it quits.

Took the long way home to swing by and check the water conditions on a small natural lake... a thin layer of slush ice was on top that could easily be broken up by some good wind and should be gone in a couple of days.

Just too early for the shoreline bites.

20160315- ...----~~<")))))><(----------------------------

20160315-Ross Lake and Wixom Lake are all ice free... water temp at the bridge was 44 degs

20160316-looks like a few days of winter coming up in the forecast lows in the upper teens YIKES! this puts a big dent in the push for some out in the boat open water fishing.

NJs not that cold, Slip but after today we'll be in the 40s again for a little while. One day 60s the next 40s...crazy time for us anglers. March is never consistent. I'm ready for the pre-spawn and hungry fish!! Best of luck on the new season. We're both looking for that monster crappie. My best so far is a 14 incher. I know they come bigger. Now I just need to get better at enticing them onto my line.
