Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Just got back into fishing for Bluegill, had an Ultralight spinning rod made and have been having lots of fun fishing my local lakes for Bluegill and Bass.

Tiny crankbaits have really been the ticket, they seem to thin out the smaller fish and rarely do I catch little gills on them.

Caught about 30 BG today, most were in the 7 - 8 inch range but a few nicer ones also showed themselves, including this 10" Specimen.

All were released to fight another day.

Hoping to crank bigger gills myself this fall .Great job John!

Very nice John, beautiful coppernose!! Congrats on the personal best!

Nice Coppernose, John.  What crankbait caught that one?

Congrats John.....no surprise it's a nice Coppernose.....way to go on the release!

Crankbait is a Strike King Bitsy Minnow, 1/8oz .
Color is a Pearl body with a pale green back.
$3 from Walmart. Its a slow sinker runs at about 3-4' deep.
I was fishing mostly 4-6' of water, along the edges of heavy hydrilla cover.
I've not heard the term "coppernose" before, what does that mean?

As for releasing, I pretty much catch and release everything I fish for. If I were to take any Gills it would be the smaller ones, certainly not the Specimens over 9".

John, Coppernose Bluegill (CNBG) are a subspecies of BG. They are found, and do best, in areas of warmer climate.

Coppernose is a species of bluegill......

Beautiful Bluegill!  Looks similar to our Lake Perris BGs except ours have smaller eyes.

Beautiful fish! It's nice to know that it was released.

"Tiny crankbaits have really been the ticket, they seem to thin out the smaller fish" -thanks for the tip! Sometimes I'm frustrated with catching fish that are much too small.

Anybody using the Yo-Zuri Snap bean?

I have fished the snap bean and done well on it at times.
