Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I know that while fly fishing hook sizes are really tiny, so i'm curious to know what size hooks you guys use when using spinning gear.  If I remember correctly i use size 4 and size 6.

I used plenty of different sizes, with the hoping they don't gut hook. Just need to know how big your targeted fishes are. Spinning gear, circle hooks, I used #6, #8, and smallest was a small batch of #10. I saw a pack of #12 circle but all sold out. Aberdeen hooks go as small as #16. Mosquito hooks smallest is #14. Otherwise, dry and wet fly hooks ranging between #14 to #20 for me, used from small stream trouts to my largest was a 3lbs bass.

I use mostly #4-8 nothing smaller,  but my most used size is #6. I like to use the short shank for drop shot, I hardly ever get a gut hooked fish with them because they have a lot less hook to swallow, sometimes with the cricket hooks they swallow the bait all the way down to the shank and they are very hard to get out with out hurting the fish.

I never use any larger hooks than a #6, although if I had to pick one to use from now on, I would go with a size 8. I have 10's and 12's also, in addition to jigs that go down to 16.

I normally use a size 8 in both regular, and circle hooks. The regular hooks I use are Eagle Claw 214 ELF . These are a fine wire hook that will sometimes bend out when snagged. The circle hooks are Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hooks. My wife likes them because she is not real good at setting the hook. I have caught a 16 1/2 lb. carp on the size 8 Eagle Claw.

I've caught trout on flies down to size 28. I have 32s but never have fished them.

Bruce

All I use is a #6 or #8 for all bluegill fishing
