Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Down here in the bayous of so central Louisiana they fish the smaller canals, bayous, ditches, etc when the tide is going out. I'm told the fish lie at the mouth of the canal that is pouring into the larger waterway. The fish gather here & wait. Does one fish the mouths, or throw up into the water & let the bobber carry the bait down ? Or does one go up into the canal in the boat, if possible, & ??  I'm after blue gills & the occasional crappie. This is all new to this old desert fisherman so any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks, steve in so la

I've fished similar conditions…  I just anchored kind of off to the side of the mouth of the stream entering the bay.  I would cast out across the current of the stream and the lure would swing out and down with the flow of the current.  Yes the fish would stack up and grab goodies being washed out into the bay with the falling tide.  You might have to move around a little to you figure out where the fish are.  You should be able to see the current lines… moving water against still water…  fish the edges.

Thanks Stan - I'll try it off to one side.  steve

Despite not liking moving water in general.......gills adapt to their surroundings and adjust their feeding patterns accordingly......In the tidal waters around coastal North Carolina we are more impacted on the sounds by wind tides and it can be a problem during the spawn when the water drops rapidly......these events are rare this time of year because sustained northerly winds do not blow often during the summer......Spawning fish normally just pull off but are reluctant to feed as they are eager to return to the shallows.......This all changes post spawn as aggressive fish can be taken around the abundant cover by drifting baits in and around close to this cover.......Clarity can be a problem in many Louisiana waterways depending on rainfall and I was never very optimistic fishing the muddy waters for bluegill.......My take Steve.....if they are still spawning they will stay in that general area until they are done.......post spawn I would look for cover such as weed lines or some sort of wood and try to take advantage of the moving water which often carries abundant food items that sunfish are very adapt to take advantage of...........

Water clarity is frequently a problem here. I always disliked muddy water - the fish can't like it I wouldn't think. So I ook for clearer waters. Thanks Jeffrey, I sure have gotten lots of ideas from posts that you and others put up, Steve
