The Red Devil is a Central American cichlid, common in the aquarium trade as you say.
Really cool to catch them, and VERY cool as a "trash fish."
Cool! Ive made it a point to fish wherever Ive gone. Even while in the NAVY, I had a small outfit with me. Sadly I was never in Hawaii, but Im interested to hear about bass fishing there.

Hang in there guys... I'll have to figure this thing out, then I'll start posting pictures. LOL
We have bluegill, but they are on the small size... Our state record is only 8 ounces. (we've caught larger ones) Most of the time we chase ofter Red Devils. They weigh from 1/2 to 1 1/2 pounds and are great fighters... The sad part is, they won't take a popping bug.
