Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I am going to fish a lake this year, that a lot of people around here don't fish. The reason it is not fished much, is that it is very clear and deep. It runs from 20ft to 90ft. I was wondering if someone could give me some ideas on how to fish this lake.

It is a manmade lake, but is very like a northern natural lake.

Thanks

Dwayne

Good Question Dwayne,

Ive got the same problem on a lake here in Ga. "Carters lake" 450 ft down by the dam, lots of stripers, walleye and spots to keep the gills thinned out but the fish that are there are good ones,,  the big thing is if you throw at the bank and pull the line 5ft back to you, you are now in 35 ft of water...so far ive had limited luck with the floating docks and blow down on the edge,,, I think you have to find the cover...what ever it is in that lake...and try to stay in the strike zone as long as you can...Is there any current, " River fed" outside bends up around the river "in current" seem to hold fish also..

Good luck,

I will be listining for answers for this myself...

John,There is lots of cover in this lake for fish. Lots of tress, only problem they are about 20ft down.

Sounds like same kind of lake,no shallows to speak of.

Thanks

Dwayne

A super clear lake, while pretty to swim in, is usually somewhat infertile. You may find the bluegill population, if it's a large population, somewhat on the small side. On the other hand, if it's as deep as you say, with limited shallows for spawning, then the gills may not be very plentiful, but there could be some big ones! It all boils down to the food available, and the number of mouths to feed. The record bluegill for my state came from water the DNR listed as infertile. No much competion, so that fish was able to utilize what limited food was available. Factor in that not many people fished there, again because of disappointing survey results from the DNR, and that monster was able to grow to over 3lbs! I would definitely check that lake out. Fish the shallowest water you can find, bonus points if you can get under some overhanging tree limbs.

And dont forget to chum 'em up!

20 feet of water over submerged trees sounds like a pretty fair spot. Find the places where the water is the shallowest and use that chum. You might also try the car dealers pennant trick to bring the "structure" up a little closer to you.
