Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

After enjoying Tony's discussion Bluegills or Bust, I thought it might be nice to see what everybody else fishes for. Indeed, our site is based on the greatest panfish and gamefish out there...the bluegill. But certainly we enjoy a variety of species. Cross-over tactics and similar applications can help us catch multiple species, and the info on BBG is top-drawer, all the way!

Here is my favorite, or 'top five' to pursue and catch...

#1 Bluegill, seeds, redears and hybrids. I like fish for these more than 60% of the time out on the water. Action, beauty, and tablefare...perfect!

#2 Crappies...another panfish heavy...great to eat, and I love the fast action at many waters.

#3 Hickory and American Shad...a 2-pound hickory will tow a five-pound largemouth around all day, period. American shad are just unbelievable.

#4 Carp...I gained a lot of respect for these giants from the Carp Mafia guys..they are just so big! Surprisingly challenging.

#5 Channel and Blue Catfish...For their size, channels fight much harder than blues and taste great. But a 58 lb blue is my biggest freshwater fish ever.

Strangely absent from the short-list are such heavies as largemouth and smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, walleye and stripers, although I will get on a kick for these guys if there is a hot bite somewhere close to me.

I guess, to me, my favorite fish is the very next one I catch!

I dont think i have 5 but these are my favorites

1.all types of bluegills

2 steelhead trout

3walleye

4crappies

5all types of ocean fishes

I guess i did come up with 5

For me it's PURE STRAIN BLUEGILL #1
                   RED EARS #2

                 ANY COLOR OF CRAPPIE#3

                   SMALLMOUTH BASS #4
                    LARGE ROCK BASS #5

Since the first time I was taken to wet a line I h

ave held a special place for big bluegill and my passion has grown stronger year after year. My top five are as follows:

1. Coppernose Bluegill....It's a topic for debate another day but I'll put this fish against any pound for pound. They are not easy to catch or locate on the vast waters of the Albemarle but they can provide great fun and tablefare for nearly 9 months out of the year with cold water being the only hurdle.

2. Shellcrackers....If you've ever lived where these guys get big like Santee Cooper lakes in S.C., just plain fun!

3. Black Crappie:....just been a river/bayou fisherman most of my life and the whites don't live there. A top fish to eat fresh and caught in numbers...what's not to like. I love telescopic fishing.

4. Flier Sunfish....caught a few over the years but have found a real sense of enjoyment recently from working to figure these guys out in numbers.

5. Warmouth/Goggle-Eye.......you can't grow up in Louisiana without growing fond of these guys....I haven't filled a five gallon bucket up with them since I left home for the Navy but the blackwaters provide a few from time to time and I never get disappointed when I see one.

Mermaids are my favorite species.....

I like all fish and don't discriminate. But if I have to make a list, I guess this would be it:

1. Bowfin – this species eats Bluegills for breakfast (not to mention fingers and hands when caught)

2. Spotted Bass – most people mistakenly think this is a largemouth or smallmouth when caught….and I LOVE correcting them!

3. Smallmouth Bass – one of the greatest fighters, period

4. The Rockster – easy to catch when a school is found

5. Chain Pickerel – a great cold weather fish

6. Mc”Gilly”cutty – man’s best all-around fish

I go through spells where I like to switch up, so my list will not stay the same. Most of the time I am just happy to be able to get out and fish
