Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Any good baked/healthier than deep frying methods for cooking BG?

Hey guys,

I'm planning to and have been eating a lot of fish lately, and I don't believe deep frying is a super healthy way (although it is super delicious) to cook the fish...especially in great quantities.

Do you guys have any delicious ways to bake or otherwise cook fish in a healthier way?

Thanks,

-Craig

Look for recipes for Shake-and-Bake for fish fillets. Plenty out there ranging from Asian to Cajun styles.

Grill..my friend, a bit of olive oil with fresh thyme and oregano in the oil, low fire, and grill to golden, you're eating extremely healthy! Sprinkle a bit of lime juice and add hot sauce, your heart and brain will thank you.

Sounds like a plan I always butter them up before I grill them. Butter, Lawreys seasoned salt, garlic powder a little dill and lemon juice.

Mix together some mayo, dijon mustard, and Mrs. Dash seasoning.  Using a silicone-bristled brush, brush the mixture over the fillets.  Sprinkle with Panko bread crumbs.

I usually bake fish fillets for 10 minutes at 350 degrees F.  Bluegill fillets are so thin, you can probably just broil them; this will brown the bread crumbs as well.  I'm still figuring out the perfect time/temp/distance from element for the broiling.  Remember, each oven is different, so you'll probably have to play with that to figure it out.

You can also put the fillets into a pyrex baking dish, season with Mrs. Dash and Lawry's Seasoned Salt.  Dot with butter or margarine, and sprinkle with lemon juice.  Broil until done and slightly browned.  Remember, time/temp/distance from element will vary.

Pan fry with a little butter and seasoned salt and add to mac n cheese instead of tuna.  You can also coat with powdered ranch dressing and panco bread crumbs and cover with chedder cheese, broil till done.

Smoked  gill is very good.

you can change the flavor by using different types of wood

I like hickory an apple wood.

Yea Chris apple is the best. When I smoked fish a lot I always got applewood to smoke my fish. The applewood was a little sweeter and had that distinctive taste. I don't know how the stuff you get from the store taste I always got mine when I trimmed the apple trees and greenwood is better.

Who buys wood for smoking ?

Im really lucky. My sister and brother both live in washington state.

they both make trips here at least 2 a year. and about every other trip they bring me

acouple bags of apple chips from the trees they have.

My brother-in-law has an older brother who is a wood worker, he does custom wood work. He saves me all his hard wood chips and saw dust. He send this down every couple of years, when my sister come for a vist.

In return I send him a batch of smoked fish. He has also sent a few salmon a couple of times. When he send them I get to keep 2 or 3 and send the rest back up to him.

it's a win win for me. free wood for smoking and free salmon now and then.

I also enjoy smoked catfish and of course smoked Gills.
