It's known that the presence of large adult male BG will suppress the sexual maturation of smaller male BG, RES should be similar.  Delayed sexual maturation tends to improve the overall size potential in sunfish.  It's looking like a good summer so far but it will be a while before I'm posting any pictures of big RES.

Interesting perspective.....Here's hoping for a good summer this year.....

Age two or three would be my guess.  My little pond had a major fish kill (herbicide drift) last summer that wiped out almost all of the RES over 6", there were some survivors in the 2" to 5" size range, this is one of those fish.  None of surviving RES spawned last summer, this year they are pulling off a major spawn and lots of RES are still sitting on beds.  If larger adult RES were present you probably wouldn't see a RES this size in breeding colors.

This is a cool fish Steve! Do you know the age of this fish? Thanks
