Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Do any of you cast small jigs?
1/64 and 1/32 with no float.. I really like casting jigs and fishing with no float. And slowly working them back. I make my own hair jigs and they fall so nice and slowly. I just lift n let them fall again.

Just wish I could get more distance. Without having to use a really long rod.

What should I be expecting casting distance wise? I'm using a daiwa presso 6.5ft rod and 4lb mono line. I would like to use some 2lb line but I just don't know if I can bring myself to do it.

The rod is new one to me and I really like it so far. Thanks

1/64 oz Lil Minnow setup (my lightest jig) up to 35-40 ft no wind...

If I had to guess I'm getting 20-ft. 30ft max. With my 1/64oz hair jig and 4lb and no bait.

Yes I have done the same with apples. Good memories as I landed one on the neighborhoods ridding tractor hood. He was a long ways off luckily I didn't hit him lol.

Well, 30' gives ya plenty of room to work a lightweight jig! At one time I'd purchased a Tenkara fly rod just to present 1/64- 1/80 oz hair jigs in creeks &streams, then began to realize I could cast these mini jigs FURTHER with my light spinning gear, and first time out testing this got a dandy 4# pound smallmouth by a big rock, 25' out in a small stream!!

And ,as you've said, if ya wanta get way out with small jigs, just use a water bubble. I have a friend from Alaska, a native Eskimo tribal elder, who has caught many thousand of trout & grayling with a water bubble, weighted nymph, and a 4'6" rod !!

JIM GRONAW;; ALSO TYES A REALLY GREAT HAIR JIG HE CALLS;; THE RIVER CRITTERS !

Idk how to post pics or I would.

I almost forgot to mention, the absolute ultimate guide to UL spin fishing with small lures/jigs is Joe Robinson's well researched/documented book, entitles " Piscatorial Absurdities (  http://www.sportsmansfinest.com/piscatorial-absurdities-by-joe-robi...  )

tell me Smoltz what type of water do you fish?  deep gin clear reservoirs or slop weed areas with laydowns and stickups?

Slip sinker,
The latter. Pretty much spot on. Do have some areas with flats though and coves. Water also has color. Usually greenish tinge. But you can see down in a few feet though. I guess it would be moderately clear.
I do fish the rivers also for redbreast. But I use a heavier jig n hook for them so no trouble casting. They are more aggressive with larger mouths.
I follow allot of your post and May pic your brain latter on some things. I don't post a whole lot but I read allot. The bluegill thing is still fairly new to me.

Smoltz, mono or braid? I get plenty of distance without a lot of effort from my 5-7 foot ultra lights and 4-5# braid. have one reel with 4# fluorocarbon and it casts very well too. I also can dig out my 8 foot rods made on 5 weight fly rod blanks and cast far enough for my needs. 25-30 feet is an easy cast for me, 40-50 feet can be done with some effort but then I lose pinpoint accuracy. Many many fish are caught within 30 feet or less of my boat including right underneath.

Just got some 2# fluorocarbon to try. Remember 2# can catch a lot of fish and big ones if one sets their drag appropriately. That said would never use it when fishing in the weeds and brush.

Kelly,
Mono. Maxima ultra green. 4lb. They make a 3lb I thought about

I do use braid for river smallies and striper

i use 6lb nanofil on cheap soft whippy glass conposite rods at 4.5 - 5 feet.30 to 40 foot casts are all i need. spiinning rods are put away as i now switch to flyrods for the most part and again 30 to 40 feet is about the range i fish, nanofil gives me a little more distance but thats just me.i would fish softer mono if i wanted longer casts

I went out and did some checking.
I'm casting my set up 30ft. Measured.
My new set up. Daiwa presso 6.5ft, pflueger president 25, 4lb maxima ultra green.
1/64oz hair jig no bait. I guess that's not bad. Add some bait to that baby and I'll get some more distance.

Just got some jig heads in the mail today. Time to do some more powder painting. Red, watermelon, chartreuse green, black. Then off to the tying bench.
