Do you love big bluegill?
The past few seasons it’s been season outdoing the last. Knowledge base on top of knowledge base. Building on some great info from this site and time on the water. I’m anticipating and looking forward to even better results with more citation fish. Anyway that’s the game plan.
Last year was the season of fishing TINY. Thin UL Lines loaded on tiny 50 series reels and light UL rods tossing tiny baits in front of fish targets…quantities of quality panfish and trophy SMB. Tossed the baits into thick cover with reckless abandon. Tiny presentations under slip bobbers thrown next to thick weed slop and weed pockets. Mid day fishing out of the kayak in less than two feet of water and tagging quality fish. Never really had another fishing boat come close to me fishing. it was like i had the lake to myself. looking forward to making some more good memories in the upcoming season.
Looking forward to any hints suggestions or comments from the BBG membership… sharing is the best way to learn and progress!
hope everyone a successful "2016 Open Water Season"

20161005-with this short stretch of summer weather the past few day I have no other choice but to take the kayak out. ;>)
Paddling to a stretch of shoreline and Long-Casting the 1/64 oz swim jigs I quickly hooked up with a 9” B.Gill, Y.Perch and some B.Crappie.
Letting the spot cool for a bit I paddled to some of my favorite vertical jigging spots I shortly hooked up with some chunky R.Bass s. one hit the 92% Master Angler Rating… very pleased with that one!
A nice old warrior Y.Perch at 13.6” was also tagged hitting the vertical jigged Lil Minnow. A nice mid 11’s B.Crappie hit the Lil Minnow jigged half way up the water column in 10-0 FOW. It seems I could always count on tagging fish throughout the summer periods on the vertical jig bite thru the lay downs.
9” class B.Gill
Nice R.Bass Vertically jigging a laydown
.13.6” Y.Perch vertically jigging the Lil Minnow
.Long/Casting the Lil Minnow tagged this nice B.Crappie
Some of the CPR’ed fish of the day!

last warm day for a while... thinking about taking the kayak out for its last trip for the season :>(
20161007- today was a nice sunny summer-like upper 70 deg day so I walked the kayak down to the lake and was on of my spots in just under 20 mins today … not bad!
Straight away I could tell the bite was off after locating fish on structure and not getting the activity when dropped in their faces. I struggled to pull a few fish of the brushpiles and rocks in 15’ FOW. Battling the wind and the waves in a kayak wasn’t helping my productivity. nice to see a R.Bass out of this spot.
I paddled to some sheltered areas tighter to the shoreline that has always provides some panfish opportunity in the past… especially with the above avg sized B.Gills which is the main focus in most of my trips.
Anchoring using the anchor trolley I positioned the kayak to allow long casts parallel to the shoreline in 5 FOW on along the shallow weed line. Long-Casting the Lil Minnow I started picking up the Y.Perch in numbers just under the 10” mark all basically the same size. At the end of the day equaled 11 in number along that stretch of shoreline. I found that twitching and hopping the bait along the bottom resulted in many of the tags a couple nice B.Gill mixed in and one B.Crappie that hit over the 11” mark.
A great tip for anyone fishing from a boat or yak is to have a short rod with your favorite vertical jig combination or bait handy to randomly drop along the side of the craft while you are working an area… I pick up many bonus fish on a trip this way!
I decide to leave this bite and try vertically jigging the lay-downs. Paddling to the opposite shoreline I visually watched the sonar for any fish activity along the deep edges of the weeds and drop-offs…. No sign of life
Once situated and anchored over the lay-downs I started experiencing the slow bite syndrome again. The wind started picking up and I eventually got booted off the spot.
Keeping the trip short because of the pain starting to stir up in the lower lumbar… I called it a satisfying trip despite not reaching the panfish limit of 25… even though all CPR’ed I like hitting at least that number in a trip.
My Best Gill of the Day!.
Nice B.Crappie at over 11”.
