Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I guess it is tying season for me now as we should be getting snow here in the next few weeks. This is usually the time of season I start tying for the following spring season of fishing.....Also building what ever rods I want to make for myself and others.

I've included some photo's of my favorite spring time patterns that I have made and been making for a long time.

Menu is 94840 Mustad dry fly hooks on all three patterns here
White yarn tails on first one , Blue New age chenille ( medium size) . 1/8th inch beads and some red crystal flash added to tail.
Second is a Yellow and red Marabou Silent Stinger so named by Sir Jeffrey on here.....

Third is my all time favorite flourecent yellow ( looks chartreuse )  with red rib ....

Please all you tiers on here submit pics if ya can of your top 3-5 patterns on here so I can see what I"m missing in the way of flies .....

There are lots of tiers on here I admire and am sure to mention a few . Dick Tabbert, Carl Hendrix, and so many others like the absolute great" Sleepy ", Mark Sleeper....... I still marvel at his work and am lucky enough to have lots of his creations.......Thanks one and all for the flies you've all sent me over the years for trial and maybe will get to use some at Rendezvous in the spring.......

proably Dick  Tabbert tooty;; or;; one of mine;; cant remember ;;  this past summer;; Dicky sent me a few of these;; told me how to make them;; so I made a few to;;; just dont know exactly if this is one of Dickys; or mine

of course;; I just have to add my beloved quill floats !!

Allan; on those sickle hooks;; all I can say is;; its like opening a can of whoop -----   !!!!!!   sickle hooks are the way to go ;; gives more room for tipping !

Excellent!

How do sickle hooks work compared to say and old school Limerick hook?

Damon; for a comparison; some regular jig hooks; and a few sickle jig hooks. the sickle hooks; when tying jigs- or flies;; can give a touch more room to hook shank--  then; because of the irregular shape; give added room for tipping with live bait.  then;; their is the deepened part of the hook; I believe also helps in a better hook set; helps to keep fish from throwing hook once caught; plus;; its easier to remove hook from a fish  !!  I had found some  sickle hooks at wal -mart;; around the crappie supplies..  only thing I can say is-- try a few;; see if you like them !

Though I've been off the water since September David, I still believe the reliable wooly bugger will always catch bluegill. Especially since the water is cooling off now. Soon as I get back form south Georgia Friday after Thanksgiving, will be itching to throw a few buggers at some bluegill.

a wooly bugger is a all time favorite to many fishermen Steve;; easy patteren to make one to

It is a great fly and so much fun to tie. I've been tying two different marabou colors for the tail and really mixing up different color fur dubbing for the body. Will be great to get out on the water again.

Yup those are a great pattern for sure Steve....Yup I've been off the water basically since August and really missed most of the season this year. Will be back next year though and good Lord willing it will be great.......

I know how you feel David about not being able to fish. After taking care of my father last year in California, lost a lot of time fishing,  but got a really good start this past spring. Then my mother became ill. Got back home, became a grandfather....so been spending some time with my new grandson in Waycross, Georgia. Been busy. Things some to be settling down now and back to normal. Time to go fishing!

Steve   knew there was something  I liked about you;; your from the S O U T H !!   ever hear of Baxley ga. ; yep;; I worked there to in the 70;s
