Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Got the new Feather Craft catalog today. There, on the back page is a "super" deal on Rio fly line... $89.95, before shipping.
Now I don't know about you, but the best part of $100 for one roll of fly line is just not in the budget.
Someone is buying it, I'm sure, and I suppose some will say, "You get what you pay for." They always do.
But, now I'm afraid to open the catalogue, for fear of a heart attack. Leo Nguyen and Dick Tabbert warned me about this fly fishing stuff... I'm listening now.
I KNEW I shoulda gone to dental school (hahaha!)

i put together a 4/5/6 wt eagle claw featherlight fiberglass ($20.00) and redington reel loaded with 5wt floating line and leader($50.00) for about $75.00 and had a blast with it last summer. 8" gills really bent that rod.

I'm with you Ken. Heres my three questions -

Is it functional?

Is it rugged enough to hold up?

Will it leave money for dinner out?

If these are met, then Im there

i have a spinning model trout and salmon action at 7.5ft that is over 30 yrs old. this rod i use for carp and it has seen hundreds of carp up to 12 pounds. this year i bought an ultralight spinning just dedicated for panfish that rekindles memories of one of my first panfish rods as a kid. the 7ft fly-rod was just a blast to use earlier this summer.

I take a sort of perverse pleasure in buying good, used equipment on the cheap. Others think nothing of dropping a C-note on a spool of line or triple that on a rod handle. And I respect that, in my own way.
But, I bubble along with my old Wright-McGill, Mitchells, and Shakespeare stuff... And am happy.
Besides, I'm generally more interested in WHERE the fish are, WHY they're in that spot and HOW I can find them... Which is why I'm always wearing you out with questions!

When I first moved to Georgia over 25 years ago, I lived on the Chattahoochie River, which is one of the top trout rivers in the S.E.  I was in our local bait shop one day and the owner, who was a friend of mine, decided to play a trick on me. He said " Vince you really trout fish a lot.  I know this organization (name unmentioned) that is all about trout fishing. They meet uptown, one evening a month, and are always looking for new members. You should go check them out tomorrow night." I showed up a few minutes early and was waiting outside for someone to introduce myself to, and to let them know I I was here for the meeting.  People started showing up, and and I told them I loved trout fishing, and fish several days a week. Their conversations went something like "I caught a 18" rainbow my last trip out west, and I am going to such and such place for a week of trout fishing. They asked me about all the places I go to trout fish and my only reply was that I have never been anywhere except down to the river. I told them I have had some great days and caught a good many trout in the river. They then started talking about local hatches and the flies they used, then asked me what patterns work well for me. I told them I caught all my trout on Green Giant corn and crickets. You should have seen the look of horror on their faces, and the way they all backed off, you would have thought I had a case of bad gas. In all fairness, this organization does a lot of good for trout streams and trout fishing. This particular chapter's members were total purists, and I soon found out it was not where I cared to be.  The next day I went in and saw my friend at his bait shop. Before he could a word, I said "I owe you one for last night!" We both had a laugh after I told him what happened.

Awesome!

I would of loved to have seen their faces when you said "corn".

i always wanted to catch a bugle mouth trout (carp) on a fly rod and ended up catching a few this past summer on a small circle hook baited with a few kernels of corn. used the floating line as an indicator worked out beautifully. had a four pounder strip into the backing. this was great fun.

BUGLE MOUTH TROUT !!!!!!!! HHHHHHHHHHHHHA HHHHHHHHHHHHA GOOD ONE KEN !!!!!!!!!!! OR THEY COULD BE CALLED GOLDEN TROUT TOO !!!!!

"Bugle Mouth Trout"... Now that's funny.
