Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

While visiting Lake Erie (Vermilion,Ohio) this past weekend, I lucked into a new tackle shop, and met the creator of some very unique spoons. They looked about the same size & shape as the ones Musky Mod has been teaching us about, except they were much thinner metal and,of course lighter. These were "Ole Pete's Hornets" in the smallest, just over 2" size. Most importantly they had the wildest colors (and names) I've ever seen - "gang Green",Spicy Chicken Wings","Sausage Gravy Milkshake", and,my favorite, "Toothless Blind Date". Here's a color chart ; http://www.olepetestackle.com/olepeteshornetspoonssmall.htm . I rigged a single hook on one this afternoon and noted these spoons have the most unique flutter and a strange side-slipping motion I've yet seen in a spoon. Tho intended for Erie walleye trolling, and having accounted for literally millions of pounds of walleyes, bass, etc over the past few years, I found when tipped with a waxworm that the bluegill & crappie ATTACKED these active little chunks of colorful metal!

Awesome colors! I was laughing out loud as I read the names of the crazy colors! I wish they made them a little smaller. I also would like to see their weights listed. What hooks do they come with?
Jeff, The spoons come with a sharp, red, round bend treble -as mentioned, they've been created for walleyes. Very easy to replace with a no.6 or 8 single, and I have a hunch that Don, the owner of Ole Pete's, would probably make em with a single if requested -he's a terrific guy and goes way out of his way to help fishermen. The small Hornet I used seems to be 1/16 oz or less in weight, but casts easily with light gear. I'm sure the thin metal gives these spoons their wild "knuckleball" action on the swim or drop, and am fairly certain that bluegill have never seen colors like these!
I've lived in N.E. Ohio'er my whole life. Know a few charter capt.. Here, the widest array of colors and most popular spoons are "Stingers". Believe made in Mich.. They have monkey puke amongst their selection, I have a couple down the basement myself. steve b
On the Ole Pete's website, Am liking the small spinner baits and jigs though ! Also enjoy trying to find products close to home too. steve b
Hi Steve, From what I hear from the Ohio guys, Don, at Ole Pete's, is always glad to customize any of his lures to your liking( and have heard of him "hand delivering" orders dockside!!!). His panfish jigs & spinnerbaits look great, but I'm thinking we can convince him to customize us some very special bluegill spoons!!
WOW AT THE COLORS! Thats almost a pick by name sight! lol. I like the Dixie Chicken.......Hmmmmm Wonder why? Cool site thanks for the info. I will have to mark that a fav place!
I'm not 100% sure, but I think you can get those from Janns for a fraction of the cost. You have to paint them though and add your split rings and hook though.
What a selection of color patterns, I really like a bunch of them.
