Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Belated fishing report, from last week of november, spillway

I took the 12 ft flat out to the Bonnet Carre spillway between new orleans and LaPlace. I always go to the West Suction canal, "the sticks" is what they call it, and this time I was without my 1.75 Gamefisher motor. It has a bad needle and seat on the carb and I need to take care of that.

I think the gas tank is cracked and is causing fuel starvation problems.

Anyway, I paddled my boat over to the area that I always fish, not far from the boat launch off Airline hwy.

Since I am mainly a sacalait fisherman, I pulled out that Master Crappie Grabber telescopic pole, which I insist is the best you can buy,, in terms of sensitivity. I did have one of those original breambusters but its gone now, thanks to the lady named Katrina who flooded our home in 2005.

Anyway, first i tried with tube jigs, three different combo colors. pink and white didnt do it, black and green didnt do it, and red and yellow didnt cut it either. Not a bite, not even a tap.

I pulled out the Temple Fork fly rod, 4W, and began throwing a Betts popper, which got me nothing. I changed to a Bream Killer, which was sent to me, homemade, tied by one of the guys on the forum here, and despite all the success I had with that same exact lure in the past, it got me nothing. I tried a dry fly, a wet fly, etc/

I put the fly rod and sacalait pole away. Pulled out the Shimano spinner with the Bass Pro shops rod, Wally Marshall special, excellent combo.

I threw a green and white buzz bait, a white spinner bait, a beetle spin, tried with jigs under a cork, nothing at all.

Next, I tied on a junebug colored plastic crawfish. I want to say its Culprit brand lure, but not sure. The second cast, bingo, i caught a bass.

The next three casts (no kidding), I snagged and lost two of the crawfish lures, sinker and hook. Moving away from the power pole, which is stumpy area, I cast off toward deeper water, and missed a bass, decent size, maybe 2 lbs. A few casts later I missed yet another one, and it was problably a small 10 inch or so sized bass.

By this time, the wind had picked up, and I was being pushed around the bayou, swinging pendulum style off my anchor. I stopped getting bites, returned to the stumpy area, and snagged two more times.

Paddled myself back to where I launched from with a bruised ego.

One thing i know for sure that hurt me was the slow retrieve the spinning reel has. It doesnt pick up slack fast enough as the rod tip dips down.

I got a Daiwa Millionaire coming in soon, wont have it with me today, but by the Grace of God I am going back out there today to enjoy myself. Praise the Lord for the work he has given me and the rest also.

Went after lunch today. I was warned the water was dirty and a little rough.wanted to try out the new zebco z03.

Long story short, not a great day. Only fished 3 hours. First cast was snagged an lost a cork and jig. After that I switched over to the spinning reel and was using a spinnerbait.

After about an hour of tryying different stuff..I picked up the
zebco again and tied on a 6 inc plasti worm. After about half hour I caught a 2 lb bass. Was a little surprised. Missed a few hits..nothing hard...so I went with the crawfish junebug coloered Zoom.

Caught another bass...then the last hour or so I was throwing a variety of stuff. Nothing worked.

Going back tomorrow or Thursday. Hope my new Millionaire has arrived in mail.

Sounds like the fishing part was OK the the catching part was missing. We have had above freezing weather last 4-5 days in Southern Wisconsin, if this keeps up the Ice will melt and I can try my Luck.

Remeber a day fishin' is always better than any day at w_ _ _ ! Jim Ducy

Yes true. I enjoyed fishing. My back is a little sore but I am alright.
