Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I haven't been out for a few weeks, but am planning a trip in the morning. I will try my favorite gill spot Unicorn Lake. I plan to launch my 10' Bass Raider plastic boat with electric troll motor. The plan is to work my favorite spots with the micro-lite and a 1/32 oz jig. I have done very well this year by putting  a Berkley Gulp Alive 1" minnow. I have been using both the Smelt and Chartruese versions. I might also make a cast or two with the long wand. Rubber spiders and maybe a popper will be on the menu with it.

I just joined this sight and hope to post the results of my trip tomorrow evening. I live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland where we have lately been experiencing a "monsoon season".  Hopefully the fish (various gill, crappie, bass, yellow perch and pickeral) will be cooperative.

Is this lake located between hwy 301 and hwy 313?.....or is it the mill pond?

Bring at least one 1/10 oz spoon with ya, and tip it with the berkley minnow.

I was going to tell you to check the wind forecast before going out but that lil pond is tiny....any depth to it?
Yes, it's small enough to get out of the wind. It has a max depth of about 8' near the dam, but average depth is about 3-4 feet. Unicorn has been a good little location for me. It has never been crowded when I visited and the fish are usually cooperative. Here's a picture from earlier this year.

Got out on the lake this morning with limited success with the gills. Best fish was an 8 incher (see photo). I did however catch about a dozen Yellow Perch, one tiny bass (6"), a few Crappie (biggest was about 11") and several pickerel (the biggest of these was about 18") The pickerel were a hoot on my microlite.

Surprising to me was the fact that two boats were already on the lake when I arrived. I usually have the place all to myself. I got chased off the water a little early with a line of thunderstorms.

Nevertheless it's always fun to get out and make a few casts. And a bonus to catch a fish or two.

Hey Ron I went to work today so you had a better time than I did! LOL It looks like you had a nice weather day out there and you still had some nice fish.

Jeffrey,

It was very nice at first. I was able to get in a few hours before the first thunderstorm (I waited that one out for about 45 minutes in the car). Got back out for an hour and a half before a line of t boomers chased me home.

I've got to admit it sure beat workin'.

Hey Ron...back when my father was alive, we used to fish Unicorn and Wye Mills for some very good bluegill action with many 8.5 to 9.5 inch fish. I have no idea what the bluegilling is at those lakes today. We also did quite well at Lake Bonnie on crappie up to almost 14 inches, but that was back in the day.

I've been fishing a number of Delaware spots the past 2 years and done well on shad, crappie and gills. Good luck in all your trips!
