We used media just like that in a "bio-tower" to treat fuel-contaminated groundwater. Bacteria will easily grow on that stuff.
On a much larger scale, we're working on retrofitting an existing wastewater treatment plant that uses RBC units (rotating biological contactors). Very similar to the biowheels used for certain aquarium filtration systems.

That's what it is designed for. I have had some Golden Shiners in it since April so it is working.

That's some interesting filter media......can a bio bed actually form on such a coarse substrate?
