Cool deal Dick......if it helps you catch a few I'll be happy.......have a great time on your trip......My 2013 family vacation is winding down but we've had a blast and it's our second best season in the last ten years behind only 2011....

I prefer a 1/32 ounce jig in the Summer months in my region Dick......I feel it provides a better chance to target the quality gills of a particular colony and gives me a chance to land predators such as largemouth and channel cats when they hit........I tip on almost every occasion as you might know already........I like a pretty big bait when I target quality gills in the 10" and higher variety........I'm fishing in water right now that is in the high 70s and lower 80s so I'm going shallow around weeds and cover at 12-24 inches under a float......Split shot is optional, I use a small spit shot to improve casting proficiency........If I went to a new body of water tomorrow, I would start with pink or chartreuse and wouldn't hesitate to try red or brown either.......I like multi colors on new water to expand my chances....easier to find a color that may work in a certain river or lake.........Good luck and feel free to ask me whatever you come up with and I'll at least give you an opinion......Good Luck!

Thanks for the welcome.  Pretty cool to find a resource like this - folks that haven't caught gills don't know what they are missing.

Hello Dick,

Thank you very much for the acceptance and warm welcoming to the family.  I am very excited to be a member fo the BBG Family.   I having been fishing for bluegill since the age of 8 when my grandmother would take me fishing with her and my granduncle.  I have loved it eversince.  Fastforword 32 years later, now I have honor of passing the tradition on to  my children.  I recently rekindled my love for bluegill fishing and since March 2013; I have been metal to the floor.

Thanks for the welcome message, Dick!  This site is great; I think I'll definitely be using it for expert advice/opinion on bluegill fishing.

As far as bluegill fishing goes, I was once a crawler only guy, then a hybrid fly/crawler bluegill fisherman, now I fish almost exclusively for them with a fly rod. My goal is to catch trophy size bluegill on the fly in Virginia's Claytor Lake.  If you or anyone you know have tips on fly fishing for 'gills in deep water, I'm all ears!

Hi Dick,

I was looking at the crappie jigs that you made. I was wondering how they compare to the commercial ones that can be bought.

Thanks for the welcome Dick.  What a great site.  Grew up fishing for bluegill just about every weekend except when the crappie were biting.  Need to pass that on to my  younger nieces and nephews.  I love fishing with a fly rod and really, just getting back in to it after years no not going.  I will look around and find out how this site functions as I am sure most of my questions are already answered in here somewhere.  Thanks again Dick.  Tim

Thank you, for the welcome Dick. I just built a new pond and I need help doing this one right. In the past I have stocked a few ponds that I think I made a poor choice of fish. perhaps with some help I can improve those mistakes.
