Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I have been fishing an abandoned company pond since last year, primarily I have been catching Bass, but I caught several monster Bluegill last year, one tipping the scale at just over 2 pounds..I caught those few on a Rapala minnow..I would love to get advise on a more reliable lure/bait. I'm fishing an 8 acre pond, with a center depth of about 45 feet. The water is fairly clear to very lightly stained, if that matters..Any help would be appreciated.

I may just give that a try Monday, along with the King Strike Itsy Bitsy minnows..I have nothing but time and Im determined to break my state record.

Tonys idea is a good one, what I was describing with suspending a bait over deeper structure with slip floats.
Find some weeds, rocks or wood with nearby deep water and cast Tonys rig to the deep aide of these. Slip floating will let you get the bait there, and drop it straight down to fish at the desired depth.
It's my favorite bluegill method next to the fly rod.

My apologies to anyone that I have not directly responded to, I have had so many of you respond that I have just now been able to take time to catch up..I assure everyone that I have read them and have taken time to write down all the suggestions and I will post results along with pics and videos sometime this week. This has been a great experience for me to have so many of you respond, hopefully I can have some of you come fishing sometime.

I haven't tried the waxworms but I will definitely add it to my list of things to try, any suggestion that may help to land the bluegill, I am willing to try, I even stayed up late last night learning about tying breem bugs. I feel like my brain will explode any minute. I have a lot of ideas, but I don't have the setup to make the bugs yet.

John, have you tried a simple, plain horizontal jighead, say around a 1/64 oz size, wilth some waxworms threaded on the hook? Using a slip float, you should be able to cover some water and entice some gills' without catching a bass on every cast.

You might check into some ice jigs also..tipped with spikes (maggots)
