Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

hey everyone i came across this site online and was happy to see other bluegille/bream fans out there. i often try to fly fish for bluegill and other bream when possible and find them so much fun on the fly rod that i'd rather catch a dozen bluegill anyday compared to possibly one bass. i do bass fish also but i'm really a bream fly fisherman.

would love to hear from others in the south carolina areas as well as across the country who love to fish fro bream. to me the ultimate satisfaction is having a big bluegill slam a hand tied fly that you tied a few day earlier in anticipation of some gill fishing. biggest bluegill for me so far on the fly was a monster 11 1/2" gill on a size 12 nymph. though i had a bass for  few seconds with that one.

now that i live in south carolina i plan on finding some big bull gills this spring/summer season and will be posting throughout the season. look forward to seeing everyones posts.

South Carolina is a great place for big gills and Shellcracker. Lake Moultrie and Lake Marion were great to me in the 80's. Not sure where you are in S.C. but I'm sure some good Gill fishing isn't far! Looking forward to the Spring.

thanks jeff and mark.

jeff that bluegill was caught in a little warm water intake creek in new york about 5 years ago when i lived on long island. that little creek stayed unfrozen throughout the winter while the rest of the lake froze. would literally catch 30 or more bluegill on the fly in the middle of january.they were all bunched up in that warmer water. anyway that huge bluegill hit a small size 12 nymph and gave me a great fight. thing is i found out about a year later after no photo record being kept that it might very well have been close to the new york state record on a fly. just something someone told me. but i don't think i'll find a bluegill on a fly that large again. maybe shellcracker but not a bluegill. thanks again for the welcome.

Welcome Thomas to this really great website. You will learn so much from so many great fishermen and I'm sure you can teach us a few things too, especially since you have caught such a giant Bluegill!  Congrats!
