Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

New guy here. Trying to get pointers on catching a really big hubcap! I'm finding information on this site very helpful! Anyone from the Richmond Texas area?

I have had the same experience. My biggest have come on slowly sinking ants, spiders or woolly bugger variations.

Hey OS,

It has been my experience over 25 years of fishnig Gills that the biggest ones I have caught are on underwater flies. I have been fortunate enough to catch many 8-91/2" gills on poppers but the few over 10"s have come on my own version of an underwater spider (www.unhookum.com order direct button, pictures of the spider) I tie the spider with different amounts of lead wire for deeper beds and windy conditions. Also fishing at the right times will add to your catch. 5 days before the full moon till a couple after and the same on the new moon....April through August.

Good luck and be sure to post the picture of the "HUBCAP"

I actually have heard the "hubcap" reference. :-) Love it.

Welcome to the group!

Just keep your tackle simple; keep your eyes open after you find likely cover(emergent grass, pads, etc.); and be stealthy(no banging on the deck of the boat or dropping soda cans, etc.. For the really big ones, also use as light a line or tippet you can get away with; try to figure out what they are eating and whether they are hitting on top or deep and use a similar fly or lure; and have patience. Good luck dude! By the way, I have never heard them called hubcaps. If you are really fishing for hubcaps, just go to the nearest public park with fishing from shore access where jerks tend to throw empty cans, discarded fishing line, plastic worm bags and other junk in the water as if the rest of us want to see it or clean it up for them - you may get lucky.
