Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

I was fishing a 5 star lake this weekend Green Lake of Green Lake county Wisconsin.  I am posting this because Green Lake has some monster Bluegills, 10 inch bluegills are more common in this lake than any other I have fished, I have witnessed 11+ inchers here as well.

I fished Friday, saturday, and sunday this weekend and never caught a small fish. I caught my limit each day , 73 were crappie and only 2 bluegills. Sunday I started fishing at 7 am, by 7:30 I had 19 crappie. Then I didn't have a bite untill 2pm.  The crappie came back, I caught 5 more by 2:15pm and they were still biting I fished untill 3pm and I caught a bunch more.

I don't use a vexilar or a camera so I was peeking down the hole from 7:30am to 2pm, I never saw a crappie but loads and loads of bluegills, all of them just swimming around I used every color and bait in my arsenal and I only got one bluegill to even look at my bait an 8 incher and it looked small compared to 50% of all the other bluegills I saw.

What would cause the crappies to be so aggressive and the bluegills to cruise almost in slow motion with no interest of looking at possible food?

I have a theory as to why the bluegills were in zombie mode.....it was super bowl Sunday.......they were in a state of denial because the Packers weren't playing....

oh yeah I used everything, waxworms, spikes, red spikes, red worms ,night crawlers and I have about 100 different colors of plastic. I also used every color of jig and hook that I have.

luckyyyyy! on the bluegills, did you tip the lures/baits with a waxworm, piece of nightcrawler, Crappie Nibbles, Maggot, etc.? i think scent has a lot to do with gills not wanting a lure or bait..something as small as a pinch of nightcrawler can add a scent that i guess "tells" the bg to go ahead and take it...just my opinion...congrats on your catch man :D
