Greg, Fish the reed beds in Deer is both easy and hard. There are two different kinds of reeds. One is short with a small diameter, and one that is very tall and much bigger in diameter. The tall ones are usually closer to deeper water. I have not had much luck finding fish in those. I find all my bass in the shorter, heavier condensed patches. I look for thin spots in the short reeds as well.
When you are at the landing motor out a good 200 yards and head west (left from the landing). Heavy equipment is a must! I'm running a 7ft heavy St.Croix Mojo casting rod with 65lb FireLine Braid. Bring lost of spinnerbaits too! I cast directly into the reeds, cutting the beds like a pizza pie. It helps to have slight wind, trolling motors don't work so well! Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Send me a link to your blog. I would enjoy reading it! I have one as well but, I haven't been on it in a year. I'm thinking about resurecting it. Deer is a tough one to crack for gills. I have tried to pattern them and have had little success. Stay in touch!

Good morning! I recently went back to the lake where I caught her and some others similar to her and I think word got out! I caught one gill, 8"er. That is a small one for that lake! I have had 12+ inchers on in there, but could not boat them.

Ive been wade fishing a lot over the past couple weeks and have caught hundreds of fish. It's been very good. A lot of the gills are of decent size but I haven't hit the 10" mark yet. Largest fish are measuring 9 5/8", which are still good fish in my neck of the woods. There are a couple crappie photos included, as I usually take some of those home for supper. All gills have been released.
