Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

LOOKS like a redear hybrid, a cross between gill and 'cracker. Chunky little 8" fish. That is saying something, too, because this pond has no inflow and gets no feeding.
The pond had been stocked with bass and gill on the past, and plenty of volunteers from Lake Murray have been added over time. I've personally dumped in lots of shellcrackers. No doubt there is some interracial mingling going on!

Thanks, Tony.
The obvious trait for me was the edging on the ear tab.
Also the markings had that variegated, red ear pattern... but with bluegill
colors.
There isn't alot of this hybridization up at the big lake near my home, I don't believe.
It is 56,000 acres, and many habitats. I'm pretty sure the fish don't really need to cross, since they don't have to share habitat. At least now I know what they look like.

Yep, that's a gillcracker....

Sorry...the details:

bait... worms, what else?
hook... #4 Aberdeen
line... 4 lb mono
rig... weighted mini float, 18" weightless dropper.

The fish in this pond respond best to a slow fall, natural bait.
I've watched them approach artificials and just swim off.
