Do you love big bluegill?

Despite calendar stating early February, the wild dogwoods are popping along the river banks in Northeast N.C........

The old timers  always told me that when the leaves on a dogwood tree get as big as a squirrels ear thats the best time to go crappie fishing.

You guys have Dogwoods blooming? One of the prettiest trees, I think. Anyone have a pic?

Like David said, we've had a few rogue dogwoods pop out this week but they may be in trouble after this weekend's cold snap! Mother nature has a way of coping with the unusual and the fish will let us know when it's time!

I've got one around the corner from me that is in full bloom, too. They're like fish, sometimes a few do their own thing.

I like the St. Patty's Day measure.

they are already blooming by you

It's safe to say the dogwoods have lied to me since we had single digit wind chills this morning......although the white perch I caught yesterday were a little early....we usually say St. Patrick's day for them around this part of the country so it was a pleasant surprise to catch a couple chunks......Coppernose are still in a cold water coma but we'll keep looking!

While it has been mild by many standards, it is not even close to the record, Jeff. tht was set back in 1954, I think. This season has kept the water cold enough to signal winter to the fish. On some of the long, warm weeks, they are moving in off the deep keeps - but they head right back once the weather turns back.

There's a big hardwood tree down here so I catch some nice Crappie and Gills off of it.....too cold yet.....they haven't moved into these creek channels off the river....it was colder by a couple degrees yesterday in the two creeks I visited, 44 and 45 degrees...brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
