Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

Despite the record heat, I got this fine 10 inch hen around 2 pm yesterday on one of Led Heds jigs.

I think the fish are actively feeding, but just taking the smaller jigs with a light touch. When I get a strike on the ocassional fast retreive, it is a solid hit, as if the fish were trying to get something that is attempting escape. But most strikes are coming off of a finesse type approach.

I should have tried it the other day Jim .The bait I got at the normally dependable bait store was lifeless, threw most of it out. Used the bad bait on spoons as you saw and managed to get a few but half dead bait does not help much.Serves me right for not checking carefully . From now on I will like I usually do.

So you think these fish are in a nuetral mood and you're teasing them with small morsels in thier face?

I am fishing them real slow, sometimes just letting them fall and getting strikes that are light taps. Using 2 lb test, which may help in strike detection. Most fish on 1/32 or 1/64 oz stuff, which I can cast well with SOS 2 pound mono.

Like you, I too would normally got to bait options during the summer, but stuck with jigs just to try and see if I could refine the jig gig a little and save a few bucks on bait.

Jim -How actively are you fishing those jigs in this heat? Are the fish hammering or just sipping?I always fish small jigs in Spring and Fall and leave them alone in the summer .With your success maybe I shouldnt.

Thanks, Jeff. I got most of the fish on a 1/64 th oz, thread-bodied, round head jig. Black marabou with sparkle body...head was pink and white.
Used one of my own, 1/16 oz football w/ brown and black craft hair for 22 bass on Thursday, including 3 fish between 4 and 5 lbs. Will post pics soon.

No, they are not fish in the background, they are small patches of floating algae.

Wow! Beautiful fish Jim! Which jig did you get her on? I need to walk on over to LedHed's house and see what he's working on now. His creations are remarkable. Hey are those fish I see in the water behind you?
