Bluegill - Big Bluegill

Do you love big bluegill?

This guy hit 5.5 pounds on a cheap spring scale....what a battle on a 12 foot telescopic pole....He crushed a live minnow at two feet......

I was fishing in the Low Country of South Carolina last year this time and ran into this guy on a telescopic pole.....

I haven't seen one of these guys lately fishing in colder water....they'll be waking up too in the coming months....violence strikes the end of your line!

If anyone is still interested in the bowfin, visit the Bowfin Anglers Group,

Lots of good stuff on them there.

I'm currently fishing in the state where the World Record Bowfin was caught in January 1980 from Forest Lake in Florence, South Carolina......21 pounds 8 ounces..........

thanks for the info.

like I said I have only seen pictures of them.

when I was a kid I remember my grandfather catching a huge Gar. I was woundering if this fish may be in thr gar family.

Sounds like it would be fun to catch one.

I have heard of them beign eaten, but never had a chance to try one.  I have some family in Houma and we while visiting about 20 years of so ago we tried to catch some of them with out luck.  We were told they were some of the best fighters and being form NE Oklahoma never had a chance to catch one.  I sure would like the op to do it again some time, would be neat to have 1 in a pond as well.

As for eating, most people use the meat as filler, adding it to something like fritters or fish cakes. This is because of what Jeff, says - improperly handled, the flesh gets soft and crumbly.

I have heard that if you marinate the fish in Heinz 57 sauce or something like that, it makes it better. But I have no experience with it

They are also devoted parents and care for their young long after most fish abandon their offspring. They are fish of quiet waters and are most often caught while fishing for something else. Superb predators with a mouth full of needle-like teeth, there are few creatures in their waters that survive their attack.

It is said that their flesh should never touch water again, once they are cleaned, or it will turn dry and "cottony.' I have caught only one in my life a huge thing that I thought would eat my hat!

PS.... as you may have guessed - I have a huge respect for them.
